How to make a chalkboard paint wall?
I want to do a wall in chalk paint in my baby’s room. Asian Paint has something of the kind, but in colours such as green, what material should I be looking for? Are there any specific brands? How should it be applied?

Hi Madhu,
Asian Paints does have a product called ‘chalkboard paint’ but it uses acrylic and not chalk as the medium. This paint is designed for blackboards or green boards It can also be used on surfaces that are to function as a board, i.e. written on with chalk. Through the product is ideal for a kids’ room, it has a limited option in colour.
In case your child is a toddler and you don’t mind if he scribbles on the wall, then do consider using this or any other similar acrylic washable paint on walls up to the correct height.
If you are looking at simpler solutions – oil bound distemper or water based emulsion paints are available. Both these would serve the purpose well.

Even though we think that emulsion paints results in a better finish, a competent painter could give the same quality for either variety. One of the biggest advantage that emulsion paints enjoy over OBD is wash ability. The fact that minor stains can be lightly washed clean in case of emulsion paint may make it a better choice for your baby’s room.
I also would like to recommend paints that are not designed to last forever for a kids’ room. Children like to stick things on the wall, and they also tire of a rooms’ look faster than us….so plan your budget in such a way that you can change the colour scheme of your children rooms’ every two or three years.
As painting of walls is not a very expensive activity, we recommend you experiment with shades, designs, patterns and textures wherever possible. And choose colours that are bright, playful yet classy.
To ensure a brush stroke free paint surface, use a soft foam roller for the last coat of paint. Instead of dunking the roller completely in paint, brush apply paint on the roller surface and then use it on the wall. This will reduce the paint consumption as well as drip stains. The roller finish will also result in a mild matter surface finish that distorts the reflected light, thus hiding minor undulations on the wall.
