Tips to mix exposed brick walls into your interior decor

CommonFloor Editorial Team

I would like to know what colours work well on a brick wall. The floors are dark in colour and the house is fluid in design.

Brick walls can be a very beautiful accent feature and they have the advantage of being easy to integrate in almost any type of decor, regardless of the style. They tend to have an industrial or rustic feel but, when combined with other influences, they can adapt and become a part of the whole decor.

Exposed brickwork is a statement piece in its own right that will add warmth and texture to kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. Whether painted or natural, add character and depth to your home with bare bricks.

Warm colors in general go with a warm brick color. We like creamy whites, mauves and other off-whites that will allow the brick to remain the main gesture in the room. If you try to do a dark, starring colors on other walls they will compete with the brick.

Architect Sanjay Nair recommends:

It is interesting to have a brick wall used as a room divider. Use it to separate the kitchen from the dining room or the hallway from the living room. Paint over the brick wall to create a lighter effect without ruining the texture of the brick. White or off white are the favourites.

Create a beautiful arch between rooms. The hallway could definitely benefit from exposed brick walls as they are a transition space and donâ??t necessarily have to match the rest of the house. The kitchen is also a great place for brick walls. They help create a warm and casual atmosphere but without being too cozy because of their texture and composition.

One of the most common ways of using bricks and brick walls is by integrating them in the design of the fireplace. Itâ??s a classical image and it gives you that cozyness that most people are trying to achieve. Brick walls are usually used as accent features and they usually complement smooth white walls.

Three looks that we love

Create a dark and cosy atmosphere by matching black exposed brickwork with muted greys and browns. Create a quirky montage by hanging diagrams, photographs and keepsakes in varying shades of paper, to add texture.

An eclectic mix of wall surfaces and subdued lighting lends a cosy yet industrial look to this bathroom. The exposed brickwork on the walls is the starting point for the colour palette – beige, red, brown and black – which confidently holds together the contrast in texture and material.

Revealing the brickwork of the chimney breast all the way to the top of the double height living roommakes the most of this expansive space. Pair the traditional fireplace with crisp neutral colours on wallsand floorsto keep the room feeling fresh and modern.
