Tips To Save Energy During Holiday Season

December or holiday season is the most expensive time of the year where people spend on food, entertainment, gifts, home decoration or Christmas decoration items etc. On top of these additional costs most people end up having a hefty electric bill. The Christmas and New Year is generally a big time for energy use, which is not only increasing your utility bill but also a threat to the environment.  With some careful planning and a few easy measures you can save energy and cut back on electricity costs.

Green ideas to save energy

Energy demand typically increases during the holiday season. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to cut down energy bill. Here are some tips to help you save energy which not only saves your money but also helps to protect the planet.

  • Get a timer for your lights: The first thing that you can do that is simple is to get a timer for your lights. Turn off your holiday lights before you go to bed, or consider installing timers to reduce the amount of time your holiday lights are on.
  • Energy-efficient LED holiday lights: Holiday Lights or decorative lights used by many people in and around their home are one of the highest energy using parts of the holidays. Use energy-efficient LED holiday lights, which use 10 percent of the energy of mini lights.
  • Don’t overload your circuits: Avoid adding too many strings of Christmas lights to any one circuit that would cause a circuit overload and a possible electrical fire. Overloading the circuit will consume more energy and cause a circuit breaker to trip or shutting off power to everything in that electrical line. Adding too many will overload the wiring associated with the Christmas lights and could start them on fire.

  • Decorate with Candles: Set up luminaries along your walkway and lit candles throughout your home to achieve a beautiful holiday glow, without adding to the electric bill. You can use soy candles as they are free of petroleum and are nearly soot-free so they won’t pollute the air in your apartment or leave those nasty smoke marks on your walls. They burn up to 50% longer than wax candles.
  • Lower your thermostat: Lowering the thermostat by just one degree Fahrenheit can reduce energy use by 3 percent. Install a programmable thermostat and set it to lower the temperature at night and whenever the house is unoccupied. Turn the thermostat down when you have guests because extra bodies in the house mean extra warmth at no cost to you.
  • Gift that use rechargeable batteries: If you buy gifts that require batteries, consider purchasing rechargeable batteries. This helps not only to reduce garbage, but also keeps toxic metals such as mercury from getting into the environment.
  • Close unused room: Close all the air vents and the door in the unused room. By doing this, your heating and cooling systems will not have to work harder to regulate extra space that just goes unused anyway.

Always unplug holiday lights before going to bed or leaving the house. With these and other easy changes, you can cut back on your energy usage without limiting your fun. Being careful with your energy usage can save your money and protect the planet. Celebrate this Christmas and New Year even more special by saving every unit of energy you can and spreading awareness among people to save energy during the holiday.
