Waste to Wealth – BBMP’s Waste Segregation Initiatives
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike has kick started some initiatives of waste segregation after one month deadline given by the Karnataka high court to make the city litter free. BBMP wants segregation of waste at source as it will reduce the quantum of waste generated by the city.
Following are some initiatives
BBMP has joined hands with ITC for initiating their WOW (wealth out of waste) project in Bangalore. This project is being carried out in 12 wards including Yetiyur, BTM layout, Koramangala, Katriguppe, Sarakki, Ejipura, JP Nagar, Pattabhiram Nagar (near Jayanagar). It may be extended to 20 more wards soon.
This project covers all sections like households, offices, schools, malls, hospitals. It aims at encouraging citizens to segregate waste at source in dry and wet waste and training rag pickers and municipal workers to collect only segregated waste and sorting it into various categories like bottles, newspapers, plastic, electronic waste.
ITC’s initiative is for substantially improving the living condition of rag pickers and municipal workers. The money generated by selling dry waste will be distributed among these rag pickers and municipal workers.
BBMP is taking another initiative of Garbage-free wards. This project will be launched on 24th July by the Chief Minister for 22 wards. Under this initiative segregation at source will be made mandatory in all these wards. Garbage contractors have been told to train pourakarmikas to collect only segregated waste from households.
The Palike has appointed nodal officers for all 22 wards for inspecting garbage collection, Dry Waste Collection Centers (DWCC) and other garbage disposal system in their wards. In addition, an audit will be done to check the status of garbage clearance at these ward by a third party committee comprising of members from Resident Welfare Association, NGOs and other volunteers. Contractors have been warned that their license will be canceled if the garbage is not cleared.
