Bomb Blast Precautions-Protect People and Property

Following the Mumbai serial blasts, people are overtly concerned for the safety of their near and dear ones. The need for added protection is far greater than ever before. If people at large understand and execute certain laid down guidelines, they can greatly reduce the potential of personal injury, property loss and trauma that accompanies bomb threats or bomb blasts. Safety and security is a top priority for apartments and buildings located in city centers where risks are higher.

Safety methods or Precautions against bomb blasts

After the Mumbai serial blasts in 2011, states and metropolitan cities have declared a Red Alert. Citizens are requested to inform the concerned authorities if they notice any suspicious activities, abandoned vehicles, articles, and other objects that cause suspicion. You can take the following precautions orsafety measures to protect people and property and minimize the risk of personal injury.

  • Stay calm and do not panic.
  • Discourage rumor mongering.
  • Sensitize all your family members, especially children.
  • Verify the antecedents of tenants before renting outyour premises.
  • Check the antecedents/credentials of chowkidars and domestic servants before hiring them. Insist on references from their previous employers. Furnish their full particulars to your police station in the format suggested by them.
  • Inform the police about any suspicious happening or unclaimed object found in suspicious circumstances.
  • Do not touch any unidentified object and do not accept any parcel from strangers.

  • Make an inquiry if a taxi or auto-rickshaw is seen parked inside the compound or outside the building for a long time.
  • Bombs being delivered by car or left in vehicles are highly possible. Visitors parking should be restricted, if possible, to 300 feet from your building or any building in a complex.
  • Security and maintenance personnel should be alert for people who act in a suspicious manner, Besides, objects, items, or parcels which look out of place or suspicious should be dealt with caution.
  • As soon as you have received a bomb threat, call the Police and provide them with the information you have gathered.
  • Try to keep people calm when evacuating a building and instruct them not to run.
  • Managers and other employees may have a better grasp of the layout of the building and therefore can be helpful when it comes to deciding specific locations to search.
  • Individuals entering the building would be required to sign a register indicating the name and room number of the person whom they wish to visit.
  • All your phones must have caller ID system. Having a facility for automatic recording of calls is not a bad idea.
  • A calm response to the bomb threat caller could result in obtaining additional information. This is especially true if the caller is a genuine one and wishes to avoid injuries or deaths.
  • In fact, more than 90% of injuries following an explosion are caused by flying shards of glass. Bomb blast mitigation film absorbs the high-energy forces from an explosion and safely holds broken glass in place.
  • The exterior configuration of a building or facility is very important. Unfortunately, in most instances, the building architect would have given little or no consideration to security, particularly toward thwarting or reducing the impact of a bomb attack.
  • The police will continue to organizenakabandis(prohibiting all movements into or out of the town), combing and search operations; therefore cooperate and bear with any inconvenience that it may cause.
  • Pass on information about abandoned vehicles, articles etc. promptly to the police at the nearest police station.
