Cantonment-Moti Bagh Metro line may complete ahead of schedule
The Metro line between Delhi Cantonment and Moti Bagh has been speeded up to make the Ring road hassle-free.
About Cantt-Moti Bagh stretch
The 6.7 km-long Delhi Cantonment-Moti Bagh line was taken up under Phase III of Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is looking to complete the construction work quickly so that the vehicular movement on the Ring Road does not get disturbed for long.
Early completion
The stretch between Delhi Cantonment and Brar Square near Dhaula Kuan is running about six months ahead of schedule and is closing completion, said Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal. It is estimated the project would be ready by October 2014.
The remaining portion of Brar Square to Moti Bagh has to pass over the Dhaula Kuan flyover and the Airport Express line. The spokesperson said that, as the viaduct is ready, soon the civil work on the Delhi Cantonment station will also be completed. All barricades from the bridge have already been removed. The stretch till Dhaula Kuan is likely to be ready by June 2014. As per schedule, the stations are to be opened in 2016 once the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar corridor becomes operational.
Not just a station
Once the Delhi Cantonment metro station becomes functional, the Brar Square pedestrian crossing will be made signal-free. Metro officials said that the station can also be used as a foot-over bridge since the entry and exit points will be kept open for non-metro users too.
Traffic congestion
The construction activities are going on at full swing at the metro stations. Since most of them lie along the Ring Road, has been leading to traffic congestion on the roads. The central verge of the road between Delhi Cantonment and Dhaula Kuan was barricaded for work in September 2012.
Beyond Moti Bagh, the Metro line will connect South Extension and Lajpat Nagar, before turning towards Mayur Vihar at the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT.
Delhi Metro – Phase III
After successful completion of Phase I and Phase II, the Government planned to connect areas around the city through Metro phase III. The plan aimed to facilitate people living in the suburbs through a reliable transport system. The Phase III of Delhi Metro covers around 105 km-long network around the city. An important thing about the Phase III metro is that it will have 23 interchangeable stations for seamless connectivity.
Some of the stations covered will be Mukundpur, Rajouri Garden, Mayapuri, Dhaula Kuan, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Trilokpuri and Yamuna Vihar. Phase III will also cover outermost areas such as Palam, Vasant Vihar, Bawana, Kalindi Kunj, etc as well as inner areas like Jamia Nagar, Delhi Gate, and others.
