DIY-Fly ribbon traps to get rid of tiny flies in kitchen

With the onset of the summer season, house flies and other insects are likely to increase their presence alarmingly. Irrespective of how clean our home interiors and immediate surroundings are, houseflies and seasonal insects are hard to stop. The best way to fight the onset of house flies in our homes is to use a fly trap. While there are expensive fly trap’s available in the market, one can easily assemble a quick fly trap using simple domestic tools that can work just as effectively. What’s more, a homemade fly ribbon trap can be reused each time you plan to make a new fly ribbon trap making it far more cost effective in the long run. Let us look at various steps to create your very own domestic fly ribbon trap for your home.

Things you would Need

All you need to build an effective ribbon trap is a sticky rat trap just like the ones commonly found in almost every household, a fishing hook and a ball of string. If you do not have a fishing hook in your home, you can easily procure one from your local hardware shop or a sports shop selling fishing equipment.

How to make fly Ribbon Trap?

Step 1: Take the fishing hook and pierce it in the middle through the lip of the sticky rat trap using a string.

Step 2: Although the fishing hook can be pierced both horizontally and vertically, try a vertical piercing of the string as it allows for a better balance to the fly ribbon trap once completed

Step 3: Once the fishing hook is pierced through the rat trap, cut off the excess piece of string used to pierce the fishing hook and tie it around the top of the hook using a simple knot.

Step 4: Leave the two ends of the string open until you find a place to hang the fly trap in your kitchen area. Once you shortlist the best area to hang the fly trap use the string ends to hang the trap.

Step 5: Your homemade fly ribbon trap is now ready to be used. Make sure you use the extra string in the knot to hang the fly trap.

Best positioning for Fly Traps

The success and failure of a homemade fly ribbon trap depend on the location of the trap. The best way to maximize the effectiveness of the fly trap is to hang it near the lights the catch flies going towards the lights when it begins to get a tad dark outside. Flies are most vulnerable when natural light is fading and artificial lights are taking over. Hanging the fly trap between the shade and window can be helpful to catch a large number of flies in the daytime.

Tips to Attract Flies to the Trap

Adding a few drops of vanilla extract on top of the fly trap an attract a large number of flies towards the tarp You can also use watermelon juice and potato juice as both these liquids emit fumes that attract a large number of house fly’s and other insects.
