Indoor Herb Gardening Tips

An indoor herb gardening enhances the beauty of your house and transforms a stale room into a vibrant one. If you are new to the idea of having an indoor herb garden, consider purchasing a kit. This will provide you with all the necessary tools to get started. Herbs are very easy to grow in the fact that they require little maintenance. For beginners, it is recommended to do some research before you start one. While you are searching online for clues on how to get this done, you can also start searching for sites that sell such items and other materials that you can use for the tasks involved. To get you started on the right track here are some basic necessities and instructions.

Tips for Indoor Herb Gardening

Many herb plants grow quite easily in containers and require only minimal care. A south or southeast window would be perfect if it gets at least 5 hours of sun per day. Herb plants or kits are simple and easy to start for beginners. Following are some useful tips for successful Indoor Herb Gardening.

  • Familiarize yourself: Familiarizing yourself with the different kinds of herbs will help you decide which plants are best for your garden. There are Annuals which will grow once a year. Annuals die in the fall due to weak root structure. Biennials plants survive for two seasons. These typically will not create fruit until the second year. Perennials will come back year after year. While the leaves will die off, the roots remain healthy.
  • Choose Herbs: Choose herbs that don’t grow too wide or tall. Chives, basil, lavender, parsley, mint and thyme are good choices. You have to make sure that you look for brief background information about these sellers before you deal with anything with them. To make sure that you are getting healthy seedlings, look at the seed packets to check if the seedlings haven’t expired yet. Aside from online sites, these items can also be purchased at the gardening section of any local discount stores.
  • Location for Plants: Choose a place having large space for your indoor garden. Install a skylight in your chosen place, as it will work as an artificial sunlight for your indoor garden. At regular intervals keep on checking the soil for your indoor garden so that it has all the required nutrients. If your indoor herb garden is not getting enough light then the leaves will grow small and lighter in color than the normal, with thin stems. Over watering is also dangerous as it destroys most of the plants roots. Keep in mind that there can be a little mess by soiling when you choose a location.
  • Care of Indoor Herb Gardens: If your herbs get light from only one side, turn them once in a while so that all sides get the light they need for even growth. Water your herb plants until you see it flow from the drainage hole. Then, empty the saucer so that the soil doesn’t continue to soak up water. During the growing season, feed them with liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Once your herbs are ready to harvest, you will need to know how to dry and store them properly. If you are only interested in growing a few types of herbs, consider using small plant pots that fit on your window sill. Before you put soil in the pot, fill it with an inch of gravel. This will keep the soil from becoming packed at the bottom, leaving room for excess water to flow out.

Indoor gardening is just as fun as having an outdoor garden. Herbs are very easy to grow in the fact that they require little maintenance. Growing your own Indoor Herb Gardening offers you fresh herbs at your fingertips. The herbs are used to flavor food in cooking, discouraging pests, providing pleasant scents or serving medicinal purposes. Having an indoor herb garden is said to kill many insects and germs and thus provide a clean and safe home. Chives, basil, lavender, parsley, mint and thyme are good choices for indoor herb garden.
