Tips for designing staircase Staircases are an imperative part of a designed home structure. They are also known as a stairway, stairwell, flight of stairs or simply stairs. They are a form of construction which is designed to bridge a large vertical distance by dividing it into smaller vertical distances known as steps. Stair designs can be in different shapes like a vertical or a circular one. They consist of two or more straight pieces which are connected at different angles. The technology has also invented arrays of stair alternatives like moving walkways, stair lifts and elevators.

Today, there are many new designs which can be implied on the staircases of your home and you can make the staircase as the fashionable element of your home. Most homes have staircases in different elegant designs made out of wood, metal and plastic. If your stairs are not a fashionable element in your home, you can make one by following the below designs.

Different types of staircase designA spiral staircase: Spiral designed staircases are in rage these days. Staircases with spiral designs can be made out of wood or metal and can be designed in different spiral angles. This shape adds glamour to the interiors and makes your home look fashionable. You can consult an architect on the type of spiral shape which can suite your home. This shape also gives a free flow feeling in your home. They can be widened or narrowed.

Long staircases: These types of staircases are constructed in large halls or opera halls. They are structured with longer stairs which are easy and spacious to climb. If your home or apartment has a large hall, these long stairs can add compliment to your home interiors and be a fashionable element.

Choose right staircase designStraight staircases: As the name suggests, straight staircases can be designed in three different ways. The first design is from top to bottom in a straight line the second one is L shaped and goes straight up and turns either right or left at a landing and the third one is a T shaped staircase which goes straight up and turns both right and left from a landing.

Freestanding staircases: These forms of staircases allow a person to completely pass underneath. They are not attached to the wall and are instead attached to the top and the bottom step. These types can be found in malls, theatres and in few homes.

Single-open-under staircases: They are commonly used in basement stairs. The structures of these stairs are that they are attached to the wall on only one side and are straight and open underneath.

Circular staircases: They are similar to the spiral staircases. The only difference is that they are completely circular and a person climbing circular stairs has to keep climbing in circular motions.

Elliptical staircases: They are structured along the side of a curved wall and each step from the bottom continues to be longer and lengthier till the middle of the staircase. The rest part of the staircase gradually decreases as it follows on top.

Areas of a staircase to be accentuated

To make your staircase a functional design element, you can install LED stairway lighting in your home. You can also opt for rainbow coloured LED lighting.

  • Functional design for staircasePiano stairs: Having these stairs at home will make the climbing person sing along, as these stairs can have piano designed stairs producing music when stepped on.
  • Wallpapered stairs: To make your stairs look more interesting ones, you can paste different designed wall papers on the vertical surface of your stairs.
  • The newel post: The newel post is the big post which is present at the starting bottom of the stairs. You can opt for stair designs like that of a flower pot or an animal bust in the newel post.
  • The balusters: They are the little spindle-ey things that keep little kids from falling off the stairs. They make up the beef of the overall railing and are spaced differently in different areas based on the building code. They can be designed in innumerable shapes and sizes.
  • The handrail: You can find extensive design in the handrail of your staircase. Also different coloured hand railings can be used in a home.
  • The balustrade: This forms the structure of the staircase. And as mentioned earlier this part can be presented in different shapes.
  • Modern staircase design for your home The Stair tread: This part is the surface of the stairs. As mentioned earlier you can paste different designed wall papers on them.
  • The risers: This is the part between each tread. As this part is prominent when one looks at a staircase, it can be decorated with designed and colourful wall papers.
  • The landing: This is the space where the stairs halt in between a flow. The landing can have different embellishments placed around.
  • The stringer: This area of a staircase can be colourful and hence can accentuate your creative staircase.
