No More Unskilled Workforce at Construction Sites
Now, developers can’t give an excuse for unskilled labor. The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has expended crores of rupees to train specialists in the construction sector. They have even furnished the names, email addresses, contact numbers, home addresses and pictures of the specialists on their website, and have requested developers to take the help of these specialists to train their unskilled labors.
This initiative has been taken by MahaRERA to allow only skilled labor at construction sites to ensure quality construction as well as to limit accidents. The laborers also persist to benefit from an insurance cover for their family members.
The MahaRERA kick-started the “training of expert trainers” initiative under which the authority will train 500 expert trainers and these trainers will further give training to 15 lakh laborers employed in the real estate sector of Maharashtra over the next 5 years by obtaining funds from Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (MBOCWWB).
A specifically-designed training facility center has also been inaugurated by the MahaRERA at Nanded City consisting of classrooms, workshop, activity hall, and the tools display area, where these expert trainers will be trained on key sections such as electrical work, plumbing, painting, mason general, bar bending, and shuttering.
Over and above, the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) has partnered with the Pune Metro and Government of India’s National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to begin the “Kushal” program. The initiative is intended at improving the skills of about one lakh construction workers in Pune and will give training to unskilled workers in fields such as Formwork/Carpeting/Centering, fitting and bar bending, masonry, plumbing, tiling, and painting.
The MahaRERA has already started recording laborers’ organizations on its site and even assuring that the workers do not miss their wages for the day. D R Hadadare, Chief Technical Officer of MahaRERA, said, “Given the good number of organizations now joining the MahaRERA as self-regulatory organizations, the work of providing training and ensuring only trained staff will be achieved sooner than expected”.
Endorsing the action, secretary of MahaRERA Vasant Prabhu said, “We just don’t want homes, we want quality homes to be delivered to home buyers. It is possible only when labor is skilled. Therefore, MahaRERA has begun a drive to train these specialists. Now, developers can seek the help of these trainers to guide and skill their unskilled labors.”
According to surveys, there are nearly 10 to 12 lakh unskilled/semi-skilled workers working with MahaRERA registered projects.
