About Panchkula

Panchkula is a district of Haryana, formed in 1989. Panchkula city, which came into existence in 1995, is one of the few planned cities in India. It is bordered by Chandigarh and Punjab in the west, Ambala district in the south and east, and Himachal Pradesh in the north and east.

Though Panchkula was formed only in the latter part of the 20th century, its history has deep roots. The Aryans are known to have been here, and evidence suggests that the Pandavas stayed here for some time, too. The discovery of silver coins from the Gupta dynasty also indicates that they might have lived here.

Today, a large part of Panchkula’s workforce is involved in agricultural activities. Manufacturing, processing, servicing, and repair also account for a large percentage of their occupations. Industrial development came to the district when it was formed and has been growing ever since, at a fast rate. It now stands as a prominent player in Haryana’s economy.

  • The population of Panchkula is 2,10,175 according to the provisional reports of the 2011 Census
  • As per the same reports, Panchkula has a sex ratio of 883 per 1000 males and the child sex ratio is 839 per 1000 boys. It has been constantly improving over the years

  • Forestry, fisheries, and animal husbandry form a subsidiary part of Panchkula’s agricultural market

Connectivity

  • The nearest commercial airport is in the capital city of Haryana, Chandigarh. An international terminal is under construction in Mohali. Domestic flights to major Indian cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and others are available frequently. The Pinjore Airforce Station is the nearest aerodrome
  • Kalka railway station and Chandigarh Junction railway station connect Panchkula to Chennai, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and other metropolitan cities in India
  • Panchkula is well-connected by road via National Highway 22 and 73. These highways connect Panchkula to New Delhi, Manali, Shimla, Dehradun, and Amritsar. Delhi is approximately a five-hour drive from here

Haryana Urban Development Authority – Water Supply

HUDA is responsible for the distribution of water in Panchkula district. The Kaushalya dam and Kajauli canal, via Chandigarh, are the two main sources of water for the city. Apart from this, 170 tube wells act as a supplementary source. HUDA is also in the process of constructing a 45 MLD capacity treatment plant to slow down the usage of ground water.
