Panchkula is a district of Haryana, formed in 1989. Panchkula city, which came into existence in 1995, is one of the few planned cities in India. It is bordered by Chandigarh and Punjab in the west, Ambala district in the south and east, and Himachal Pradesh in the north and east.
Though Panchkula was formed only in the latter part of the 20th century, its history has deep roots. The Aryans are known to have been here, and evidence suggests that the Pandavas stayed here for some time, too. The discovery of silver coins from the Gupta dynasty also indicates that they might have lived here.
Today, a large part of Panchkula’s workforce is involved in agricultural activities. Manufacturing, processing, servicing, and repair also account for a large percentage of their occupations. Industrial development came to the district when it was formed and has been growing ever since, at a fast rate. It now stands as a prominent player in Haryana’s economy.
