Located in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, Roorkee sits upon a flat terrain surrounded by the grandeur of the Himalayas from the East and North East. A city and seat of the Haridwar Municipal Corporation, it rests on the banks of Ganges canal, between Dehradun and Delhi. It also has been the headquarters of the Bengal Sappers (Bengal Engineer Group) since 1853.
In 1900, Roorkee started the manufacture of survey and nautical instruments for the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, now known as IIT Roorkee. Later, it moved on to the manufacturing of compasses, levels and other surveying instruments. Ever since Uttarakhand got it’s state status, Roorkee has grown into an industrial powerhouse with over 100 industries and corporate houses under the State Industrial Corporation of Uttarakhand. Apart from many business and service centres, Roorkee also has many advertising agencies also providing electronic, print, outdoor and online media services.

Roorkee is the home to many prominent research centres including National Institute of Hydrology, Irrigation Design Organisation, and Central Building Research Institute etc. While these institutes contribute significantly towards the development of Roorkee, none have been more influential than IIT-Roorkee over the years, giving it a globally recognizable face. The city of Roorkee and its surroundings have an immense potential for the development of educational and industrial activities as the Government recently signed a Rs. 540 crore agreement with the Asian Development Bank for aiding urban and infrastructural development in Uttarakhand. For transforming the rural areas of Roorkee into productive economic zones, Provision of Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA) has been used as one of strategies to see this forward. With the help of IIT-Roorkee, the government plans to develop a comprehensive sewerage system that will have the capacity to provide proper sanitation facilities to residents in Roorkee. The city of Roorkee shelters a myriad of old monuments, though majority of the city’s construction has taken place recently. This sudden pace of development clearly indicates the advancement of technology in the growing city.
