About Sonipat

Sonipat is a municipal corporation and town in Haryana. It is part of the national capital region and is just 20 kilometres away from the city of Delhi. The Yamuna River runs along the Eastern boundary of the city.

The city has deep roots within Hindu mythology and it is believed that it was founded by the five Pandava brothers during the time of the Mahabharata. According to a legend, the city was originally known as Sonaprastha and then Swarnaprastha which means ‘Golden City’.

  • Sonipat does not have a dedicated airport with regular flights. However, the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is located just 43 km away and can be reached by road. The Dehradun airport is also used by the residents of Sonipat and is located 176 km away
  • The Sonipat Railway Station (sometimes known as the Sonepat Railway Station) is the primary mode of inter-city connectivity in the city. There are regular trains that travel to and from here on a daily basis
  • Sonipat is also connected to other major cities through a regular bus transport
  • Road connectivity in Sonipat is also good because the city is located on National Highway 1 and is easily reachable from all major cities
  • Shortly, the Delhi metro will be set up in Sonipat as well which will make inter-city travel a lot simpler. It will also make it easy to travel from the city to the Indira Gandhi International Airport
