About Yavatmal

Earlier part of Madhya Pradesh, Yavatmal merged with Maharashtra in 1960, the year the state was formed. Yavatmal city is the district’s headquarters and is known as the Cotton City. Lying in the Wardha Penganga-Wainganga plain, the region is agriculturally rich with a variety of kharif and rabi crops.

The city comes to life during festivals and fairs like Diwali, Bakrid, Maroti Mahraj, Shri Ranganath Swami, Mahashivaratri and Ghanti Baba. Apart from a vibrant cultural life, the city has a number of small-scale and large-scale industries like spinning mills, handmade paper and pressing mills.

Raymonds is among the prominent companies settled here. The proposed industrial estate coming up in the region is going to help with the further advancement of industries here. The population of students is also rising in the city because of the number of engineering, medical and other colleges that have started around here.

  • Yavatmal’s population is 1,16,714 according to the provisional reports of the 2011 census. The city’s urban population is 1,38,464
  • The city has a high sex ratio of 988 per 1000 males, although child sex ratio is 880 per 1000 boys, as per the census 2011 reports

  • One of the most prominent units here is the Raymond factory. It produces the denim material for jeans. Rasoya Proteins is another large-scale undertaking in Yavatmal
  • Raw cotton and denim jeans are the major exportable items in Yavatmal. The industrial estate coming up in the region is going to support a variety of industrial units. The city’s excellent road connectivity gives it a lot of potential to grow further

  • Yavatmal Airport or Jawaharlal Darda Airport is an airport operated by Reliance Airport Developers Private Limited. It is about 7 km away from the city and has flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Nagpur
  • Yavatmal Railway Station is the nearest station that connects to Nagpur and Pune. Wani Junction is used to transport coal to Chanakha, Rajur and Majari-Varoda
  • The State Highway from Amravati to Chandrapur and Nagpur to Tulzapur pass through Yavatmal and the National Highway NH-7 from Nagpur to Hyderabad passes though the district. This puts the city in a very strategic location in terms of trade

Yavatmal Civic Administration

  • The Yavatmal Municipal Corporation (YMC) is a 33-year old local civic body that manages civic administration for Yavatmal. They take care of urban planning and development, as well maintains and upgrade facilities for the city’s residents
  • The administrative activities of the corporation follow the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act 1949. YMC is the oldest corporation in the district and headed by a commissioner and mayor
  • In order to make administration easier, Yavatmal district is divided into 16 tehsils and 16 panchayat samities
  • The Urban Development Department of the government of Maharashtra manages urban growth and planning for the entire state of Maharashtra, including Yavatmal. The Amravati Housing and Area Development Board is responsible for the development of residential areas in Yavatmal

Yavatmal Infrastructure

The city has grown from being a quiet town into a bustling city. Superb road and rail connectivity has allowed the textile and cotton industry to flourish in the region. The city also has a number of tourist attractions like forts, temples and hot springs.

Educational infrastructure is also well developed, with many engineering, medical and physical education institutes located in the region. Some of them are the Babasaheb Naik College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Darda Institute of Engineering and Technology, Gunwantrao Deshmukh College of Education, Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College and Manoharrao Nanasaheb Deshmukh Arts and Science College.

The planned industrial estate, in combination with the city’s strategic location is the main reason for trade and commerce in the region. Reliance Infrastructure hopes to set up an aero parts recycling plant.
