Earlier part of Madhya Pradesh, Yavatmal merged with Maharashtra in 1960, the year the state was formed. Yavatmal city is the district’s headquarters and is known as the Cotton City. Lying in the Wardha Penganga-Wainganga plain, the region is agriculturally rich with a variety of kharif and rabi crops.
The city comes to life during festivals and fairs like Diwali, Bakrid, Maroti Mahraj, Shri Ranganath Swami, Mahashivaratri and Ghanti Baba. Apart from a vibrant cultural life, the city has a number of small-scale and large-scale industries like spinning mills, handmade paper and pressing mills.
Raymonds is among the prominent companies settled here. The proposed industrial estate coming up in the region is going to help with the further advancement of industries here. The population of students is also rising in the city because of the number of engineering, medical and other colleges that have started around here.

The city has grown from being a quiet town into a bustling city. Superb road and rail connectivity has allowed the textile and cotton industry to flourish in the region. The city also has a number of tourist attractions like forts, temples and hot springs.
Educational infrastructure is also well developed, with many engineering, medical and physical education institutes located in the region. Some of them are the Babasaheb Naik College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Darda Institute of Engineering and Technology, Gunwantrao Deshmukh College of Education, Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College and Manoharrao Nanasaheb Deshmukh Arts and Science College.
The planned industrial estate, in combination with the city’s strategic location is the main reason for trade and commerce in the region. Reliance Infrastructure hopes to set up an aero parts recycling plant.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL) is one of four companies that handle the state’s power needs, excluding Mumbai and including Yavatmal. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission determines the tariff to be charged for the various categories of citizens.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) was unbundled into the MSEB Holding Co. Ltd., MSEDCL, Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd., and Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. in 2003.
Indian Chamber of Commerce awarded MSEDCL as the best distribution utility among 30 states at the 5th All India Energy Conference in 2011.

Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran
