Home Decoration Tips to Enhance Your Mood

Ambience of a space affects mood, entering in a dark room promotes a feeling of discomfort while a dim lit room with spot lighting on a table having two glass of wine and red roses adds romance to the setting, whereas switching on the light and adding bright colors to the wall will bring a lots of energy and life to the room. Interior designers and restaurant owners have long known this, so they have soft cushions and dim lighting if they want their customer to linger in for some more time or provide hard seats and bright colors to make the customer eat fast and leave the seat for another customer.

Understand the nature of your room

So it is very important to understand the nature of the room (if it is a room to relax like bed room? Or a family place like living room?) before deciding the color, furnishings, accessories and placement of furniture in the room.

Arrangement of furniture and accessories in a room:
Many of us recognize that too much messed up room can create a feeling of anxiety but do not practice to have well arranged furniture in a room. A room with chairs along the wall, a big sofa in the front of the window, a big wall painting of tiger can make a person feel vulnerable. Human mind senses danger from the sharp edges, so some sharp edged furniture’s and bookshelf’s are not advisable for the room which is for family time or comfort like living room or bed room. A room like living room should have big open obstruction free
windows and comfortable low height sitting preferably with circular or square shaped arrangement to facilitate interaction. Limited, uncomfortable or undesirably height seating makes a person feels awkward and tense.

The arrangement of family photographs in the living rooms promotes the feeling of attachment but a side table packed out with the photographs can irritate a person who is trying to find a place to place his book or a glass of drink. On the other hand a table with flower vase with cheerful flowers next to a wide open window creates a happy and friendly mood.

Storage is a common problem and people tend to buy heavy furniture to create more storage space. This will make your room look like a storage place. Too much of heavy furniture gives a dull and lazy look to the room and makes you lazy too. Try to have light, moveable furniture for healthy, moving and full of energy life.

View from the window:

Having nature’s view is always more rejuvenating than gazing on manmade structures. Nature is the best teacher and human has an inborn tendency to respond positively to nature. Watching outside a window is considered as distraction but according to a study conducted on 60 students, the students provided with the natures view outside their windows have demonstrated better analytical skills, improved memory and secured higher grades in comparison to the students provided the urban concrete view outside their window. So, it is a well proven fact that the view of green spaces helps in improving memory, concentration and boost up the creativity.

Having a view of massive buildings from the window is quite common in urban setting. Try to hang pots from the lintel or place some pots on the lower projection level of the window. Decorative curtains also ads to charm and this will give a new and fresh look to your house and this will refresh your life too.

Ceiling height:

Perception of the spaces may influence intellect and the ability to concentrate on work. An open space with the ceiling height above 10’ will help your mind open up and encourages you to take challenging tasks. Height ceiling also helps you to be more creative and in make abstract connections. The low ceiling space promotes a feeling of confinement and thus helps to concentrate on minute details. Paying bills, working on computer, chopping vegetables and the other tasks which involve detailing work are better performed in a low ceiling room.

Color your mood

Colors are very powerful and choosing right color for a room can simulate the mood and behavior of the user. Bright colors imply energy and light, if used in a house bring positive energy and lifts the mood of the people in house. Subtle colors create a feeling of calmness and relax the mood. Soft blue, green and shades of grey are used in the bedrooms in order to bring a feeling of calmness in the user. If too many colors are used in single rooms than it causes a mix of energy and makes the place look chaotic. It is important to use a bright color in combination with the subtle shades to bring down the energy of the room. Now let’s know about some colors and where we can use them.

  • Blue brings calmness; depreciate the feeling of hunger and helps in getting rid of bad dreams. Soft blues, shades of grey and other neutral colors are used in bedrooms and bathrooms to impart a feeling of peacefulness in the user.
  • Yellow is associated with the color of sun light and brings positivity and happiness with it. It is a cheerful color and is best suited for your kitchen from where you start your day. But over use of yellow can make the user uneasy, so it is to be balanced with the bright white ceiling or any other subtle color.
  • Red color symbolizes passion, intimacy and stimulates appetite. Red and other warm colors are used by the restaurants to create a comfortable, cozy and romantic ambience. This color is best for bedrooms but can provoke restlessness, so have to be used as accents and not as the dominant color.
  • Orange is another warm shade and is best suited for the kids play room as it encourages enthusiastic mood. This color also creates a sense of intimacy so can be used in living room. It can also be a great color for dining room because it simulates the digestion.
  • Purple is another color that brings out a passionate mood. This color is also associated with royalty and luxury and if used with the rite technique can make the room look bigger and spacious.
  • Green is a neutral color and brings peace and can help alleviate stress. Green is great color for kid’s room and bed room.
  • White color provokes a feeling of calmness and purity. But it looks elegant until only it is kept clean.

Lighting in a room

It is scientifically proven that adequate sunlight improves intelligence of a kid and retired residents have overall improved brain function when exposed to extra natural light, so lighting of a room can have a long impact on our well being. Ample sunlight also helps in curing depression. Dim lighting helps people to be more open and getting indulge in intimate talks. So dim lighting is preferable at the time of family gathering or in the bedroom. It is always better to have intelligent lighting in your house so that you can control the level of luminance as per the occasion or the mood you want to create.

  • Bed room lighting: Bedroom is the place to relax and can be given the desired ambience by mood lighting. Before choosing the lighting style one should choose the decorative style of the bedroom. For lighting balance plays an important role, gentle lighting is required for a bedroom with traditional décor. In a room with contemporary decor, use lighting as an element to create subtle drama of shadow and light.
  • Kitchen lighting: The easiest way to change the atmosphere of the entire room is artificial lighting. The lighting in a kitchen should be provided in a way that with one switch you can convert your bright kitchen into a dim and softly lit place where you can have your meal quietly. Moreover there should be proper lighting for the work station in a kitchen to make the meal preparation and clean-up more efficient and safer.
  • Living Room Lighting: Lighting helps in setting the mood. In general people love to have a bright and full of light living room but it’s important to have all the lighting fixtures in your living area with dimmers, so that you can set the desired mood. People generally prefer to read newspaper and do bill work in living areas, so task lighting is a must. The floor lamps or ceiling lamps with down lighting provides adequate lighting for the reading task.
