Comprehensive Transport Plan by HDMA to cost Rs.1.25 L cr
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HDMA) is planning to draft a long-term Comprehensive Transport Plan (CTP) to be made effective by 2041. As per this plan, Hyderabad will have 360 km of metro rail network, 428 km of MMTS network and 360 km of Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS). The estimated cost of the project is Rs.1.25 lakh crore.
Existing and ongoing projects:
According to statistics regarding ongoing transport projects being undertaken in Hyderabad, the Phase-I of the metro rail project consists of 72 km, the present MMTS network is 46 km long while the proposed Phase-II of the MMTS network is 102 km long. Besides these existing and ongoing transport projects, there are other future projects that are proposed in the CTP.
Proposed future projects:
One of the major projects proposed is a 1,085-km long highway network. It is intended to meet the requirements for the transit oriented development which is proposed along the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The other proposed projects that are included in the CTP are the development of 13 transit-oriented growth centers along the ORR as well as 13 urban nodes, 46 urban centers and 33 major industrial areas outside the ORR.
HDMA prepares draft proposal:
According to the draft report prepared by the HDMA for the proposed CTP, the estimated total population of Hyderabad Metropolitan Area (HMA) by 2041 would be 19 million, while the employed population is expected to be 9.3 million. This is in comparison to the figures of 9.6 million and 3.7 million respectively, recorded during the previous census conducted in 2011. The state government has already approved the draft CTP-2014 as well as the draft Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Master Plan-2031 prepared for HMA.
Objections and suggestions sought to draft proposal:
The HDMA issued a public notice on November 27, 2013, seeking objections and suggestions with regards to the draft proposals approved by the government. All objections and suggestions received will be gone through in detail, before plans are formulated. The same would then be forwarded to the state government for its final approval. It is estimated that about Rs.5,000-6,000 crore would be required every year for the implementation of the CTP in the HMR region. With regards to raising funds for the implementation of the plan, the HMDA is studying various options that have been employed in other international cities
