About Dhanteras
With Dhanteras round the corner, prayers for wealth and well being reverberate across the country.
Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi is observed two days before Diwali in parts of India. It is a part of Diwali celebrations and primarily celebrated in North India, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
The day is dedicated to Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods. People hang up paper lanterns with festoons and sends out the message of the arrival of Diwali. Although Dhanteras is usually associated with material wealth, in fact, it is also about celebrations to develop spiritual wealth and family bonding.
It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits Dhanteras at her devotees’ house and fulfills their wishes. Also, Lord Dhan and wealth Kubera (Dhan-Kubera) is also worshiped on this day.
The word Dhan means wealth and Teras means 13th day as per the Hindu calendar. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin.
