Diwali Home Decor: What to shop to welcome the festival of lights?

Diwali Home DecorDiwali is just around the corner! Like every year, the rush has already started to welcome the festival of lights in India. The Hindu festival of lights is usually held during the months of October to mid-November to mark the victory of goodness over evil.

The festival days are filled with cultural and religious beliefs. Lights, decoration, rangoli, sweets and crackers, Diwali is celebrated with great fervour throughout the country.  Most families display their creativity and artistry during the Diwali celebrations, decorating their homes with colorful designs and items.

When deciding to prep your house for the festival of lights, there are many different ideas that you can employ. You can choose what to do according to your budget, creativity and time frame available. Thus, you need not always spend dollops of cash to get the best decorations. A little bit of creativity and inspiration can take you a long way. Here’a note on some must have items for your Diwali shopping.

Home decor items to shop for this Diwali

Diyas: Diyas are primarily used because the legend says that after Lord Ram’s victory over Raavan, the people of Ayodhya welcomed him home by lighting up their land with small earthen oil lamps. To this day, the tradition is observed in homes across India. The brown-colored clay lamp contains a cotton wick immersed in ghee or oil and is lighted and kept in different patterns in homes. Nowadays, diyas made of different materials and of various shapes, colours and sizes are available too.

Fancy Lights: Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness and hence the festival days are filled with brightly lit diyas and lamps in homes. Most of the decorating ideas involves illuminating your home with light and that includes other items other than diyas and lamps.

Candles: Apart from these items, one can also use scented and colorful candles to bring in a festive ambiance. There are different types of lamps like Chinese lamps that are available in different styles and sizes and these can be hung outside the house or kept in a delightful artwork in the front of the house. Lamps and lamp shades can be incorporated instead of sticking to the normal outdoor lights. Creating your own special Diwali lantern can add a personal touch to the festival.

Rangoli Powders: Apart from the lights, another important aspect of Diwali is Rangoli. It is an intricate work of art that features different themes and designs and can be made using colored powder. You can also use different types of flowers with colored powder to make beautiful designs. Rangoli designs are meant to welcome the goddess of wealth into the homes.

Idols: Even though idols are not on top of your shopping list, it is a good idea to make festival times to buy new idols to your pooja room. Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesha are worshiped on Diwali day.

Sweets: Aside from the lights and artwork, Diwali is also all about sweets. People buy and make lots of sweets in their homes and gift and share them with neighbours and guests. Many different types of sweet delicacies are made during the month of Diwali.

The sharing of sweets and gifts during the festival strengthens the bond between people, allowing love and friendship to flourish.
