Containers which are thin and narrow are not suitable for miniature gardens. The container should allow a proper drainage system in order to let the plants grow without any problems. Plants in stagnant water cannot grow well. Also opting for a broad container will let you place many accessories along with a variety of plants. Accessories like a wire plant stand, terra cotta pots and concrete bird baths can be placed in the miniature garden.

Selected place for a mini garden: It is very important that you choose a precise place which can have your miniature garden. The place should have ample amount of sunlight and ventilation. It should be free from all pests and should be out of reach of children. The place should also be spacious to keep many pots and accessories.

Types of plants and flowers: For this art of gardening, you will need a variety of miniature trees, creepers, mosses, grasses and ornamental flowering plants. Having a mixture of all these will create a lush pattern in your mini garden. It is advised that you should not purchase trees and plants which are larger than your container. The trees can include miniature boxwoods, spindles, ferns, thymes and tea trees. The types of grasses which can be used are stonecrop, scotch moss, blue fescue, pennyroyal and scabwort. To compliment your garden you can make use of colourful flowered plants like rose plant, lobelia and alyssum. Apart from just the small plants, you can go in for potted palm trees. These trees will give your miniature garden/balcony a cool and serene looks.

Make use of accessories like a mini pool, fountain, topiary, mini chairs, benches and other furniture.

Assembling of the miniature garden: One of the important aspects of having a proper miniature garden is to have all the vital components and techniques on how to plants them. Firstly, you need to have a proper drainage system for your plants to grow well. Punch holes in your container for a proper drainage and avoid the water from stagnating. Embellishments like aluminium screening, small rocks, pebbles, pottery shards and other materials can be used to prevent soil erosion. Also a layer of pea gravel will prevent soil erosion. You should also be particular about the different types of soil and which types of plants are best suited. You should plan a sketch on how to assemble your plants in the container. Place them in an organised and pleasing manner. Once you have arranged them in order, manure them and water them all over.

How to take care of your miniature garden?

If you find the topsoil of your mini garden dry, water it. Make sure that your mini garden is situated in a place with moderate temperature. The temperature change for your mini garden depends on the type of plants you have. If you have a miniature garden with herbs, you will have to prune them regularly and keep them in shape. Pruning them regularly will result in an abundant growth of flowers.
