Koramangala: At peril with open drain issues
Defining the statement of cozy living, Koramangala tops the chart among the long list of preferred localities in Bangalore. However, the growing menace of open drains in the vicinity foul up the entire facade of the region, and hence demands for immediate attention.
Open drains, carrying piles of waste flowing through both ends of the roads, confirms the fact that the waste management of the locality has gone for a toss. For passer-bys, the foul smell of the drains has turned out to be their worst nightmare.
Considered as one of the sought after residential localities in the city with posh bungalows and wide boulevards, Koramangala has caught the attention for generating 3000 tonnes of solid waste everyday, out of which around 1139 tonnes are deported to Karnataka Composting Development Corporation. The rest is dumped on roadsides which glues a patch on the image of the neighborhood significantly.
Generating tons of solid waste has acted as a bane for the locality, paralyzing the vicinity with dust pollution. Hazardous waste disposal and outdated waste retrievals have led Koramangala towards a fall. Despite a number of warnings by the BBMP, the issue has not been taken in hand, eventually leading to a significant dip in locality ratings.
Wake Up Clean Up, a civil society platform in league with BBMP, which has been put in motion in 22 wards, is the first step to put a lid on the growing issue of open drains in Koramangala. Together with the aid of BBMP, the government aims to bring down the garbage menace in the locality and revert back the locality its previous grandeur.
