Rajyotsava or more specifically, Kannada Rajyotsava or Karnataka Rajyotsava denotes the birth of Karnataka. On November 1, 1956, all the Kannada speaking provinces in the south was merged together to form the state of Karnataka, and on this day every year, the state celebrates its formation.
The State Formation Day is an official government holiday and on this day the government announces the honours list of the people who will be awarded the Rajyotsava awards by the state government in recognition of their contributions to the state. The state flag is hoisted and the CM and Governor will address the people after which cultural events like Kannada book releases, community festivals, concerts, orchestra and fairs will conducted.
States Reorganisation Act of 1956
The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 is an Act to provide for the reorganisation of the States of India and for matters connected therewith. The Act reorganised the states and union territories from an existing State to another existing State or to a new State. November 1, 1956 is not only a State Formation Day for Karnataka but also to other states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Bombay (Now Maharashtra and Gujarat), Madras (Now Tamil Nadu), Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir.

Plan Event or Agenda for the day
Get together with your community members and plan the type of events that need to be conducted. If you have an association, then call a meeting with the members and plan the activities and send invites to all the residents informing them of the events. You can put up a bulletin board with the information of the events or send individual invites.
Flag Hoisting
The state flag can be hoisted in the morning of the Rajyotsava and the state anthem can be sung. All the residents of the association should attend the function which will bring in a feeling of unity and brotherhood.
Themes and Costumes
Incorporate themes into the events and get everyone to show up in a costume. You can centre the theme on the history of the state or the state colours. Since the Karnataka state flag has two colours, you can divide the people into two categories – red and yellow- and organise the events with two teams.
Have stalls and counters selling Karnataka flags and themed attires and badges and other accessories. You can hold themed costume contests and give away prizes to the winner.
Processions
The society members can organize a colourful march past and processions that will make people aware of the event.
Cultural events
As is with any major festival or celebration, holding cultural programmes will ensure the participation of a majority of the people. Organise shows like folk dances and folk song competition.
Members can get together and perform skits or dramas based on the state’s history and legendary figures of Karnataka. Art competitions and craft making competitions can be held for kids.
Get together a group of the residents and go on a cleaning spree. You can clean out the surrounding areas of your association as well as your premises and commit towards a regular sanitation program. The association can also join hands with NGOs and help in improving the roads and cleaning public walkways, footpaths and parks.
