Tips for Wood Coatings to Save Wood Products
Every apartment in India comprises of the main component; wood, all over the space. Wood, which is a natural, organic product earns its place in every household and is used for an array of purposes and places from kitchen to bathroom and so on. People consider wood as the most innovative and creative material which can be used for designing houses and major parts of interiors.
Wood is widely used universally because of its comfortable, stronger and long lasting properties. Although wood lasts longer, there are a few factors that become threats for the material. Few of the major enemies are moisture, UV rays, insects, rodents and so on. In order to keep your furnishing and other wooden oriented materials intact, here are a few steps which can come in handy;
Ensure cleanliness: Clean the embedded dirt, fungus and stains before you start the process of wood preservation. Thoroughly clean the surface of the wood and ensure to keep a track of wood cleaning along with polishing once in a month. One can make use of tea or other cleanser to clean the wooden material.
Usage of pigmented coatings: As various materials made up of wood are widely used, there are various techniques used to preserve wood. In order to give wood a fine finishing, there are various coatings available. Coatings are oil based, water based and water based oil modified. These coatings are applied in different techniques.
The oil based coating converts the wood into yellowish-brown when applied. It forms a thick durable film when applied and dries slowly when compared to other coatings. Similarly, the water based coating dries up instantly and is white in colour. It gives the wood a natural colour and requires more ventilation while application. The water based oil modified coating gives an amber colour similar to that of an oil based coating and dries up instantly.
Choose the right polish: While choosing the polish for wood, one has to wisely go through the options depending on the nature and colour of the wood. Each wooden object should be applied with the suitable polish and coating method. Precisely follow the instructions delivered with each type of polish. Not all wooden materials require the same number of coatings; each object requires a different number of coating and polish.
Follow the applying procedures: As mentioned earlier, each polish and wooden material requires a different technique and coating for application. Materials like either a brush, spray or a cloth is used for application. Also various other forms of applications can be followed for wood treatment.
A brush can be used while polishing flat wooden surfaces to create a durable layer. Any brush can be used to swipe a large area on the wooden object; hence this makes your task an easier one. Also one has to choose the right brush while coating. Brushes like natural bristle and others can be used in order to get a fine finishing. Avoid using a foam brush or a roller, as this would result in a mess.
Similarly, a cloth or a wiping technique can be used for contoured surfaces. Using a brush might create a mess on such surfaces. Also by following the wiping method, one can form thinner coats as well.
Another technique for polishing wooden objects can be the sprays. They are handy and can be used for surfaces which are not within the reach. One has to be very careful while using an aerosol spray to avoid spreading, dripping and over spraying.
Natural preservatives: Other than chemical based preservatives one can also opt for the natural preservatives at home. One of the widely used natural wood preservative is the Tung oil. The treatment of wood by the usage of Tung oil has been followed since time immemorial in various countries. Large forms of wooden objects were treated by using Tung oil which is known to penetrate the wood and make it durable. Other natural wood treatments like heat treatment and mud treatment are also practised.
Painting: Another effective form of preserving wood is painting. Painting a wooden object will protect it by retaining its colour and texture. Paints can be applied in either a liquid form or a spray form. Today, there are various paints available in the market. Paints range from primer to varnish, emulsion paint, lacquer, enamel and so on. Also one has an array of choices which he/she can opt for.
Sanding the wooden objects: This is one of the important techniques which have to be followed in order to assure a prefect finishing. After each coat of wood treatment one has to sand the object with a fine sand paper to remove the bumps or any hindrance. Also wet sanding process can enhance the beauty of the wood.
