Ways to Kill Gnats Indoors
Have you ever noticed small, frisky flies hovering around your food or your plants indoors? They’re the gnats which are present in abundance all over your home in areas which are wet and damp. Leftover food, vegetables and soft food placed in your kitchen and other places can welcome the gnats indoors. It is not necessary that gnats in your home are attracted only to stale products.
Gnats are abundant indoors during summer and are a great nuisance for most of them. The sights of tiny flying flies make a person feel unhygienic and kill their appetite. They are also present if you have potted plants inside your home. Gnats love damp and wet places which are present around your sink, pots, food which can develop fungus and so on. In order to avoid feeling nauseated and have a healthy indoor ambiance; here are a few steps to get rid of them. They are normally known as vinegar flies or fruit flies and tend to like dark places. They can lay up to 300 eggs in a short span of time.
Place food in an unreachable place: Make sure that you do not place the food in a place where there is an easy access to the gnats in your kitchen. Food is the main reason for them to survive, if there is no food, there are less chances of their survival. Store all the fruits and vegetables in a closed place, cover all the foods, avoid keeping your kitchen and other areas damp. Always make sure that you do not leave the trash can filled with the waste and keep it closed tight with a lid.
Cleanliness: Keep your counters and other kitchen areas clean and clean them with wet wipes which are not scented. Keeping a bowl with vinegar will help the gnats attract towards it. Cover the bowl with a cloth punched with holes in it. Once the gnats are attracted towards the vinegar bowl they die instantly rather than hovering around. Make sure you change your vinegar often.
Avoid placing damp pots indoors: It is advisable that you do not place potted plants indoors as this can attract gnats instantly due to the damp and wet area. If you really want to have plants indoors, one of the best ways to avoid attracting gnats is to let the soil dry by keeping the pot outside after watering them. Also there are various insecticides which can be used to kill them.
Hairspray can kill them: On of the best ways to get rid of gnats is to spray them with a hairspray rather than an insecticide. Doing so will suffocate them and kill them. You can use this technique when you are dealing with a smaller amount of gnats.
Pesticides to kill them: Any hardware store around your home will have the pesticide to kill the gnats. They are in the form of liquids, sprays, scented sticks and so on. They work instantly and drive away the gnats for days together. Avoid using mild pesticides which can cause harm to your health.
Gnats are of various types. Few of them bite and are harmful to your health. It is always better that you resolve this problem and stay hygienic.
