About Dum Dum

Overview :

Dum Dum, situated in the north-eastern parts of Kolkata is a developed locality of North 24 Parganas District in the state of West Bengal. The name was derived from the Persian word damdama, which refers to a raised mound or a battery. The three cities that bear the name are Dum Dum, North Dum Dum, and South Dum Dum. All three are part of the Kolkata urban agglomeration. North Dum Dum still contains large rural enclaves. South Dum Dum constitutes the northern fringe of Greater Kolkata. It is also a populated municipality under Barrackpore Commissionaire. It comes under Barrackpore sub-division and locality is supervised by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. Belgharia, Panihati, Madhyamgram, Rajarhat, Baranagar, Baguiati, Agarpara are its neighbouring localities. The nearby localities include Nagerbazar, Motijheel, Ghughudanga, Private Road, Chatakal, Jawpur, Rajbari and Lal Bagan. It is the main entry points to the city Kolkata, providing a number of transportation facilities into that city from the north-west, such as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport which offers domestic and international flights. It has developed into a modern commercial hub and also host the Ordnance Factory Dumdum (OFDC) and Gun & Shell Factory Cossipore(GSF) of the Ordnance Factories Board. The city has several hospitals and colleges affiliated with the University Of Calcutta. Some of the key residential projects in Dum Dum are SGIL Residenzza, Siddhi Vinayak Apartment 2, Padmalaya Apartment, Merlin Urvan, SD Shantiniketan among others.

 

Connectivity :

Dum Dum has excellent road connectivity to other parts of the city via road and railways. Jessore Road is the major road which passes through the middle of the locality which further connect to Belgharia Expressway or AH 1. Other arterial roads are Italgacha Road, Aurobindo Sarani, and Netaji Subhas Sarani. NH 12 is also very close to the locality. There are plenty of blue private and minibusses buses available, as well as a few CSTC or WBSTC or CTC buses.

Howrah Railway Station is the major railway station which is located at a distance of 17.6 km via Thakurnagar - Panchpota Road.

This locality has an international airport (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport which is located at a driving distance of 2.5 km via Kolkata Airport Road and NH 12.

The Dum Dum metro station is one of the major stations in Kolkata Metro Line 1. The majority of trains terminate at Dum Dum Station, as it is better connected to other regions than Noapara.

Bidhan Nagar, Belgharia, Sealdah, Agarpara. Kolkata Railway Station is its nearby railway stations. However, Dum Dum Railway junction is the nearest railway station to Dum Dum which is located at a distance of 6 km via Dum Dum Road and Jessore Road.

NH 34 starts from Dalkhola and ends at Dum Dum Road, one of the prime routes into the city of Dum Dum. Buses ply both arterial roads: the Jessore Road and the Dum Dum Road.
