Over the last few years, salt production in localities such as Kelambakkam, Thiruvidanthai, Thaiyur, and Kalavakkam has significantly reduced.

Approximately 3,500 acres of land has been leased out by the Central and State governments to salt manufacturers. As the water in the canal is polluted, salt manufacturers have been forced to extract sub-soil brine from the ground. Although the density of brine is much more than seawater, the output is not much. The salt manufacturers have raised a request to the authorities to prevent sewage inflow into the canal, but Public Works Department and Metrowater have turned a deaf ear to their requests. This contaminated water has caused many to get skin ailments.

 

Factors for Growth in the Future

With the concentration of residential projects by Artha Property, Prabhavathi Builders, Green Home, and JHL Global Pvt Ltd, Kelambakkam will soon brim with real estate activity. Chennai One World, Prabhavati Cascade, Villa Green, Vijay Raja Spruce, Purva Swanlake, and Vishwakarma In Town are few upcoming residential projects in the area.

There are plans to widen Old Mahabalipuram Road, as well. This road will be transformed into a six-lane stretch between Siruseri and Poonjeri, and connect to East-Coast Road. The current four-lane road will have two bypasses at Kelambakkam and Thiruporur.
