Q: Hey I heard that the Hyderabad roads don't meet the requiremtns of IRC standards. So what is to happen now about that? Are there any developmental projects that are going to improve our roads?
The roads have been known to get washed away. Because the base is of such poor quality. And don't get me started on the number of potholes and craters on the road that have led to multiple accidents in the past.
Even those roads needing only cement concrete are not laid in accordance with IRC regulations. They only use M 15 - 20 grade material, and IRC requires a much superior quality.
The deteriorating roads are a result of traffic impact and congestion in Hyderabad. Also there is not enough concentration of bitumen i.e the glue or binder in the mix. Also the road thickness falls short of IRC requirements as it is way less than 300 mm.
Now it's quite cool because there's such a thing as a 'contractor clause'. Contractors have to sign the agreement for a period of 5 yyears. Which states that during this time, any road repairs need to be undertaken by contractor himself.
GHMC has also hired a 'road doctor' at the cost of 30 lakh. But this also is a scam to earn more money. But we don't need these things if we can just build proper roads to begin with !
I feel fault is on Corporation also. Because they do whatever road work in order to please the contractors. even if it does not abide by IRC norms. Even if it includes things like laying the same road again and again just to fill the pockets of these contractors. And the corporation's poor quality of work is never talked about or doubted.
Now commissioner of GHMC has said that there are already plans of 3 road projects that will completely adhere with IRC norms. He also says that because of reasons like politicans and uncooperative residents, this has slowed down road work and GHMC couldn't help but do a shoddy job.
Even GHMC recognizes that Hyderabad roads are very bad and does now meet IRC requirements. But they're always blaming others. Like politicans who always intervene and delay the road works. Or residents who constantly raise objections to the laying of a particular road.
The guide to better road management was made in 1934. That was a very long time ago, but Hyderabad's roads have been rendered unfit for use by IRC specifications. From materials used for the road to the base on which it is constructed, Hyderabad hasn't been following road specifications. And now many roads are unfit for use.
