Solid waste management system in Coimbatore

Q: What is the status of the funds allocated to the solid waste management system program in Coimbatore? Ive heard that there is some discrepancy in the money being used, and also there is no accountability.

Yes they completely failed to ensure that the company segregated the waste into degradable and non-degradable, converted into manure the degradable waste and process the non-degradable waste into rejects for landfill and recyclable waste.

From all these reports, it looks like the Corporation was not only splurging to manage solid waste, but also was least concerned about the return on investment it made.

Ive read that of the Rs. 53.44 crore, the civic body had spent Rs. 15.76 crore in 2013-14. Rs. 10.11 crore of that sum went to the Coimbatore Integrated Waste Management Company pvt ltd, which managed the dump yard in Vellalore.

Thanks to the RTI, these informations are coming out now. I think some civic activist asked for this info under the RTI, and thats the only reason why it came out. Im pretty sure the corporation doesnt want this knowledge to be public

So basically the corporation has spent a whopping Rs. 3.66 lakh a day in the last four years to remove garbage from the city’s streets, transport the same to the dump yard in Vellalore and process it.

Yes thats right and whats astonishing is that this amount is around 50% of what the Central and State Governments gave the civic body under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme to implement it.

There were more RTI queries - the quantity of waste generated every day, processed and converted to manure, recycled and used for landfill, but the Corporation did not have any data on any of this. I think this only proves that the civic body’s monitoring system is weak.

They are doing a lot actually. Apparently, if the news reports are to be believed, the Coimbatore Corporation has spent Rs. 53.44 crore in the past four years towards solid waste management.
