First of all I appreciate Mr.KCR for his decision to cleanup the Hussain sagar lake.Eventhough it is tough task, it will be successfully completed by the dedication of govt and concerned officials working with the project.Nothing is impossible.I hope it will be done well.
Hussainsagar is mainly being de-watered to improve quality of water, quantity and infiltration. Going by the present structure, the state government is running three months behind schedule which is a shame as they are not working with the same zeal that they presented when saying this.
The non-potable water can be used for construction, irrigation, landscaping, gardening or any washing purpose. One of the major tasks faced by the owing agency is mixing of storm water with sewerage water, entering the lake.
Going by the present condition, the man-made lake by 2023 would be ready for raw use (non drinkable) according to experts from the Buddha Purnima Project of HMDA. With the progress of the Hussainsagar and Catchment Area project, the lake is gradually on a natural level increasing in the amount of dissolved oxygen that brings back aquatic life.
There have some new reports on how long the water in Hussainsagar lake can be used if it is not dewatered. Supposedly, it would take close to eight years for the tank to reach a level where the water can be termed “non-potable” and used for irrigation and other purposes.
True. The PCB has earlier prohibited the dumping of silt near the kukkatpally nala. For the amount of silt that is in the lake the cost of transportation alone will take up any where near a fer crores which is a huge burden.
There are other issues that are likely to come up during this which is the transportation and dumping of silt which must be first approved by the Pollution Control Board who first check whether the silt is poisonous or hazardous and then give the permissions.
Here's some specifics on how long the draining of the lake. The tank area is 513. 14 feet against which 512 feet is available. IF the water from here is releasesd at approximately 400 cusecs a day it would take about a month and a half to drain it. Also it must be left to dry fr atleast 15 days before continuing further.
I read that the lake is estimated to contain over 45 lakh cubic metres of silt which are of about 1 metre in depth. Without the removal of this a project to refill with fresh water would be utterly points as suggested by experts.
Bascially the HMDA project earlier was done with the financial backing of a Japanese company where the de silting was done and over 6 lakh cubic centnimeter of silt was removed from three nalas the Picket,Banjara and Balkapur nala which covered a total of 500 sq. metres.
True. The lake's bed is around 1200 acres and hence the time period is warranted but this would be the time even if this project was taken up on a priority basis and this estimated time was arrived upon by a HMDA project of the similar kind.
The officials that were working on this have reported saying that the emptying of the lake would take about 45 days but the de silting will take very long to about 4 years to be completed which is a long time than planned.
Chief minister K CHandra Shekhar Rao had said that this would be the main project that his government would work on. and had given the responsibility to Hyderabad Metropolitan Developmental Authority (HMDA), Greater Hyderabad Municipal COrporation (GHMC) and the irrigation department.
Telangana government's actual plan was to empty the Hussain Sagar, de-silt it and re- fill it again by the beginning of the monsoons this year. But the officials that are in charge of the project have suggested the actual time frame that it might be taking.
Pretty ambitious. Hussain Sagar gets around 50 million litres per day in terms of sewage and murk. To stop this inflow will be a huge task. Besides, I heard that the lake has about 430 metric tons of garbage and all present in it which was recently cleared. Come on guys, the lake is over 1200 acres big! It seems a little tough.
Maybe. But by roping in big machinery and with a proper strategy, I think this can be achieved. If the lake is cleaned properly, then it will benefit the entire city of hyderabad. The lake is in a prime locality, and it will do good to the areas around in terms of sanitation also.
See even though the Hussain Sagar area is famous and is a prominent location, we dont really see a lot of commercial establishments around the banks of the area. Neither are there many residential projects around, The reason people hesitate to live here is due to the pollution of this lake, But one it gets cleaned, then there probably will be more projects that will come up around that area.
The CM of Telangana actually wants the lake to be "dry cleaned". He is planning of emptying the entire lake in the summer of next month and wants to do an extensive cleaning of this lake. The lake only has two outlets from where the water can go out...one is near the Marriot hotel and the other is near the BPP office.
Hey, yes. The clean up process of the Hussain Sagar lake is already under going. The cabinet recently cleared the proposal for this and has alloted rs 100, crore for this project. The Hussain Sagar lake has been in a very bad state for a really long time now. And its time to actually clean it and make it the fresh water lake it once was.
Yes, I have also heard that the government is planning to build some skyscrapers around the Hussain Sagar lake. So, with the lake all cleaned up and some skyscrapers coming up... this area is all set to see a big boom in infrastructure and real estate. The price of the area will be really high now.
