Details about the steps taken by corporation for property tax in Coimbatore
Q: Hey guys, is the Coimbatore Corporation taking any steps to collect the property tax efficiently in the city? The end of the first half financial year is almost near.
The corporation is really strict about the payment of taxes right now. If the assessees failed to pay tax within the next few days, the civic body said it would not hesitate to sever connection, and property owners with dues should come forward to pay the first half-year tax within the period.
BUt now the elections are over and i think the corporation should focus more on the collection of taxes. During the elections, the civic body was forced to deploy its bill collectors and other officers, who were in charge of the various processes of conducting elections like voter slip verification, distribution,
The property tax was a major source of revenue to the civic body of the Coimbatore Corporation that also had other means of income like water charges, rent from shops and leased property and vacant land tax.
The Coimbatore Corporation has been going slow in meeting the property tax collection target. at the end of the first half-year, the civic body had collected only 36 per cent of the Rs. 11,986 lakh it was supposed to collect. Last year too, at the end of the first half-year, the Corporation’s position was no different. This will result in a loss for them only later on.
Yes, i have heard this too. Of the Rs. 11,045 lakh it was supposed to collect, it had collected only Rs. 3,900 lakh. This translated to 35 per cent. the civic body said that at the start of the current financial year, the Corporation had planned to step up the drive but it could not proceed as planned because of the 2014 Parliamentary election and the unexpected mayoral by-poll.
