Hi Guys,

In my point of view, at the block level, residents have taken efforts to transform small ditches into fields that can be used for some kind of agriculture. While every government promises they will address the issue of garbage disposal, it fails to take off. With prices in the range of Rs 3,500-7,000 per sq ft in Kochi, realty is crowned by some exclusive homes on sale. But basics such as sewerage remain a problem even in this progressive city.

@ Govinda,

Government policies such as ‘Kudumbashree’ or women self help groups, 100 days of employment schemes and Clean Kerala Mission have all triggered better living conditions among the underprivileged, but what lacks is supervision. There needs to be strict guidelines on where the dumping sites should be. Some contractors who transport garbage meet severe resistance from locals and activists who are worried about environmental hazards.

According to me, most households in Kerala go in for vermiculture of biodegradable waste such as kitchen dump. The dried leaves from their agricultural land are processed as chaaram, which is used as a fertilizer. Sewage and drainage systems are an issue even in the main cities of Ernakulam and Trivandrum, which are hotspots for NRI investments.

As per different sources, , Pathanamthitta and Kollam are the two districts (both in Kerala) that have the cleanest air in the country. But this highly clean, literate state has a different set of problems. At the global level, we hold discussions on global warming and ozone layer depletion. At the local level in Kerala, it is the residents who have done the maximum to get the garbage disposal mechanisms right with almost zero level participation from the government.

Hi Mr Govinda,
Unlike other cities where lack of education or civic sense might be one of the reasons that may have contributed to issues in solid waste management, most residents here are aware of the pros and cons. However, what is really lacking is integrated waste management techniques that include waste processing and treatment of dumps.

Hi Govinda,

As per my knowledge, waste management definition :- Waste management is the precise name for the collection, transportation, disposal or recycling and monitoring of waste. This term is assigned to the material, waste material that is produced through human being activity. This material is managed to avoid its adverse effect over human health and environment. Most of the time, waste is managed to get resources from it. The waste to be managed includes all forms of matter i.e. gaseous, liquid, solid and radioactive matter.
