Most of us think that cleaning and maintaining the furniture at home is an easy task. Upholstery furniture cleaning and maintaining requires a lot of care and time. Furniture is among our fixed assets and keeps getting depreciated over the years due to their frequent use. Different types of furniture require different methods which can protect from external and internal harmful factors.
How to preserve furniture
We invest a huge sum in expensive furniture or even pick up the used furniture for our home. To maintain and keep the shine of the furniture appropriate cleaning techniques are required. This will also help you preserve them for years together in future. Following are a few tips;
Regular cleaning: Cleaning your furniture should be considered as an important and a daily routine. Dust off the dirt with a piece of cloth or use a sponge soaked in water for rigid dirt. If your furniture isn’t too dirty and soiled, you can simply wash it off with water and desiccate it. Apart from washing your furniture you can also just wipe it with a dry cloth and add polish to it. Avoid using a rough brush or tool as this can harm your furniture. There are also various furniture cleansers which can be used in the cleaning process. If you do not prefer chemical based cleansers you can always use lime, linseed oil and vinegar.
- Vacuum cleaning: Other than just getting rid of the dust on the surface of your furniture, you should make use of the vacuum cleaner to clean the curves and depths of the upholstery. The rugs, curtains, couches and sofas in your home accumulate heaps of dust and dirt. Cleaning these spots with a vacuum cleaner will pull out all the debris and make your upholstery look clean and neat. This will also avoid the production of dust mites in your home. Make sure that you do not damage the fibre or the upholstery materials while using a vacuum cleaner. It is advisable that you purchase a cleaner according to the materials of the
upholstery in your home.
- Painting and polishing: Regular painting and polishing your furniture is required to maintain it for a long term. If it is wooden or metal furniture make sure that you paint it at regular intervals and do not leave water traces as these can leave spots after the paint dries. Use liquid wax and polish of the same colour of your furniture to retain its elegant look. If you have teak wood furniture in your home, you can maintain it by oiling it regularly with teak oil. Teak wood furniture is naturally oily and hence does not require any water cleaning. You just need to apply extra oil and prevent the settling of dust. Clean the wood thoroughly before you oil it.
- Stain removing on your furniture: Most of the time there are unexpected stains on your upholstery and other fabrics. You can make use of soap and water and if the stain still persists, you can sand out the furniture. Sand your furniture by making use of fine sandpaper and rubbing it on it. Do not be tough while rubbing as this can remove the furniture polish as well. Rub the sand paper in the direction of the grain. Apply the polish or oil it once the spot is removed.
- Upholstery furniture cleaning: Most of us have fabric related furniture in our home like carpets, curtains, rugs, door mats and son on. To clean them you can hire professional cleaners or make use of homemade remedies to clean them. You can gently brush the fabric and clean them with water. Avoid rubbing hard on the fabrics as this can ruin the texture and create a blot. Also the method of steam cleaning can be opted. Avoid using harsh detergents.
- Furniture settlement: Avoid placing heavy furniture directly on rugs or fabrics. Doing this will cause damage to the furniture legs as well as the fabric by shrinking or tearing it. To avoid this you can get rug pads and place them under the furniture legs.
Furniture care
- Always keep your furniture away from extreme temperatures and dampness.
- Avoid using chemical based cleansers and opt for organic ones or homemade ones.
- Always use a soft lint free cloth to clean your furniture.
- It is better that you cover your furniture occasionally if not in use to prevent dust settlement. But remember that you do not leave it covered for a longer time as this will lead to the production of moisture and mould.
- One of the best ways to avoid mould growth on your furniture is to clean them regularly.
