Rainwater Harvesting Structures should be monitored

Rainwater Harvesting in Bangalore minimizes the demand for groundwater and can reduce up to 30% of the water requirement.

Rainwater Harvesting is a technique in which the rainwater is accumulated and stored for reusing. This recycled water is used for an array of purposes like drinking, irrigation, for livestock and other typical uses. The rainwater collected from the roofs of various buildings can make a significant contribution to the availability of water.

Uses of rainwater harvesting

There are innumerable uses of rainwater harvesting, which are as follows.

  • Storage of rainwater for direct use: Typically roof areas qualify well for such a strategy. The water from this run-off is first rain separated, filtered and then let into the storage. The water can be used for all household purposes such as washing, cleaning, gardening etc. A water testing and treatment process prior to the use for drinking and cooking purposes is recommended. Provide a capacity of 0.2 to 0.3 liters per square meter of the roof area in case the roof is maintained clean.
  • Groundwater recharge: In the context of Bangalore, the most effective recharge structure has been found to be a “recharge well” whose depth is a minimum of around 20 feet. These recharge wells recharge the shallow aquifer. Water needs to be distilled adequately before allowing the water into recharge wells.

Rainwater Harvesting is not only important source of water supply but also saves groundwater by minimizing the demand of water. The combination of modern engineering and ancient social principles in RWH System have decreased runoff water and eliminated problems such as overflow of manholes or flooding of road during rain. Rainwater Harvesting in Bangalore can reduce up to 30% of the water requirement.

In Mumbai, more than 10% of the water supplied by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) is used for innumerable purposes which also include the non-potable ones. In such cases the BMC has implied a rule that the water acquired from rainwater harvesting should be used for non-potable purposes rather than the clean water.

Cities like Mumbai and others have made it mandatory for every house owner to install the RWH to get a building clearance. They are also offering them incentives to install the RWH system.

Why is monitoring rainwater structure important?

Various cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and others are now implementing strict measures to monitor rainwater harvesting structures. These measures when implied help in determining the efficiency of water harvesting systems and the benefits increased to the community in the areas.

The importance of monitoring rainwater harvesting are:

  • Monitoring rainwater harvesting will help in the increase of surface and ground water storage.
  • The technique will also benefit the population of an area by increasing the availability of surface and ground water through rainwater harvesting and augmentation measures.
  • It improves quality of the recharged water.
  • It helps in the periodic operation and maintenance of recharging structures for safeguarding of catchment areas against possible pollution and degradation activities as well as water harvesting.
  • Helps in major water conservation by making people aware of the benefits and outcome of the implementation measures in sectorial reform programme.
  • This will be an inbuilt system for executing schemes as well as concurrent systems through independent consultants. It further will also help the agencies with long experience in implementing Rainwater Harvesting and Ground water recharging works.
  • The rainwater harvesting technology should be appropriately chosen based on the local area and culture. It should be thoroughly assessed before and after implementation and corrections made for better involvement of people.
  • The technique has to be carried out through a watershed conservation approach with committees for all the water levels.
