Tips to ward off kitchen odors
After all the hard work of cooking, cleaning and scrubbing in the kitchen, you will still be left out with another challenging task. I.e., on how to ward off the food odours from your kitchen. There are various foods which smell strange while cooking and eating, these odours are trapped in your kitchen due to various reasons. Factors responsible for a smelly kitchen can be foods like meat, fish, garlic or even the trash in the kitchen, sink contents and the dirt settled on the appliances. A smelly kitchen is not a welcoming place to step in; you need to follow certain methods in order to keep your kitchen free from the reeking smells. At times just the soap and scrub does not help you to get rid of all the odours. Here are a few simple steps;
Crackdown the food odours: If your kitchen has the meat or the fish smell lingering around which you have cooked a day before, make sure you drive it away with the use of a homemade mixture. Give your kitchen a whiff of white vinegar in a pan along with water and boil it. Boil it for few minutes, as vinegar is acidic, it tends to lessen the foul smell.
Refrigerator care: This is one of the main reasons as to why your kitchen or dining room lingers with strange smells. Every time we open the refrigerator we get nauseated because of the foul smell from the refrigerator. In order to avoid this, firstly you need to clean up the entire fridge and de-frost it. Dispose all the non-used stuff and re arrange the contents. Try arranging similar things in slots so that it is easy for you to pick up when in need rather than misplacing them. You need to wipe the inside of the refrigerator with the help of a sponge or a clean cloth which is dipped in baking soda. Once the wiping part is done, wring the same cloth and dip it in vinegar and wipe all over again to avoid the mildew growth. You can also place a bag of baking soda with holes punched in it inside the refrigerator.
Dispose the trash regularly: You always need to attentive enough to dispose of the trash regularly in order to avoid further chaos. If not practised regularly, the garbage stench can spread all over the kitchen. Once the garbage is disposed off, wipe the bin with a wet cloth to avoid any left overs. It is advisable to use trash covers rather than dumping the waste directly in your bin. Do not forget to spray the inside and the around areas of the bin with a disinfectant available in the market. Doing this regularly will stop your kitchen from smelling. Also you can place fresh orange or lemon peels in your bin.
Sink care: A sink is one of the places which is busy most of the time during all our chores. Hence it tends to smell of various pungent odors. To clear this out, pour a boiling mixture of perfumed smelling detergent and water in the sink. If the smell still persists, pour a boiling mixture of bleach and water. Apart from the surface of the sink, even the sewers stink most of the times. In such cases, pour a little amount of commercial cleaner down the pipe to clear out the stench.
Clean sponge/wipe: It so happens that most of the time, the cloth or the sponge which you use for wiping all over the kitchen tends to smell for long. It is quite difficult to get rid of the smell from the wipe. In such cases, run the sponge or the cloth in the washing machine or soak it in a mixture of water and bleach. This will also help you get rid of all the germs.
Plastic storage items: Most of us think of re-using plastic containers for a longer time. Unfortunately, plastic containers are always trapped with the smells of onion, garlic or any other meat. It is advisable to dispose them off if the shelf life of the container has reduced. But if you insist on keeping them intact in your kitchen, take a crumpled piece of newspaper and place it in the container with the lid closed tight. You wake up in the morning to find the odour vanished.
Appliance care: Every time you use appliance in your kitchen large amounts of the liquids or the paste tends to remain on the appliances. In such cases you can wash/ wipe them clean or remove the debris with a paper towel if you’re opting to conserve water. Also you can clean them in a dishwasher machine. Once you have cleaned the appliances through, leave them to drip dry and leave the windows ajar. You can also place small pouches of baking soda in and around the appliances.
Wooden kitchenware: Every one of us loves to adorn our kitchen with wooden utensils which give a natural look to our kitchen. It is quite a challenging task to get rid of the food smells from your wooden ware, as the wood is so porous and the residues tend to remain in the gaps of the wood. You can get rid of the smell out of your woodenware by simply rubbing the surface with a slice of lemon.
Ventilation: This is one of the most important aspects of keeping your kitchen smell free. You can install an exhaust fan or keep your windows open during the day. Let the fresh air circulate in and ward off the smelly odours. Another rare method to get rid of odours in your kitchen is to make something aromatic or spray a room freshener.
