Mylapore is one of the oldest residential locality located in the South of Chennai. It is also called Thirumayilai. It is considered one of the most religious and cultural hubs of the city. It is home to hundreds of temples, churches, and mosques. It comes under the jurisdiction of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), formerly known as Madras Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA). Mylapore is located about 7.4 km kilometers to the south of the Chennai city. It lies between Triplicane and Teynampet in the west and across to the coast in the east. The locality is known for its tree-lined avenues, Kapaleeshwar Temple, San Thome Basilica and Ramakrishna Math. Other prominent localities situated close to Mylapore are Adyar, Alwarpet, Mandaveli, Royapettah, Nungambakkam, T Nagar, Anna Nagar, Egmore, Porur, Maduravoyal among others. It is very close to some of the posh areas of the city like RA Puram, Boat Club, Adyar, SBI Colony etc. This area is in demand as they have the high-quality infrastructure. It has smooth roads, good power supply and a number of retail outlets and recreational centers. Mylapore possesses excellent social infrastructure with good schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities within a few kilometers radius. It is also famous for shopping centers and markets. Mylapore is easily accessible by rail and road. It connects to other parts of the city via Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses and the Thirumayilai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), which connects it to Chennai Beach in the north and Velachery in the south.
It enjoys excellent connectivity to Chennai International Airport which is located at a distance of 15 km via Chennai-Nagapattinam Highway/Chennai-Trichy Highway.
Kutchery Road, Luz Church Road, Santhome High Road, TTK Salai and Dr. Radha Krishnan Salai are some of the busy roads of Mylapore which connects it to other parts of the Chennai city such as Chennai Central, T. Nagar, Tambaram, Broadway, Alwarpet, Sai Nagar, T. Nagar, Anna Sathya Nagar etc.
Light House, Thirumayilai, Mandaveli, Teynampet are the nearby railway stations to Mylapore. However, Thirumayilai is its nearest railway station to Mylapore situated about 450 meters away via Luz Church Road. Chennai Central Railway Station is around 7.5 km away from Mylapore via Anna Salai Road.
The locality also has a tram line running through Kutchery Road from Santhome via Luz, Mylapore.
