Pinch yourself to believe this home is for real!
As the pace of modern life continues to accelerate, we are becoming more and more disconnected from nature and its life-giving benefits. With the skyrocketing pollution levels and lessening of time in our lives, it’s evermore important to bring nature back to our lives.
Many architects and designers are proactively finding ways to reconnect us with the touch and feel of nature and this home in Trivandrum is a great example of how to blend practicality and style into traditional architecture.
Every home project should begin with understanding the location and a site’s unique qualities. This house was built on a 2200 square feet plot, which has an abundance of rain and sunshine. The owner’s requirement was to build a home that invites the beauty of the surroundings inside and one must admit that the designer was quite successful in delivering to this scope.
At the heart of this house is a courtyard that’s open to the sky, which allows maximum daylight and breeze into the house. In fact, there’s no need to switch on the fans or lights during the day. The courtyard has been further beautified with a mango tree, bamboo bushes, natural stones and real grass.
Next to the courtyard is a verandah that connects the main entrance to the rooms. The verandah has a true traditional look with wooden pillars, stained glasses and wooden flooring.
The main attraction here is a river that flows just beside the house and the bedrooms have glass walls to allow the soothing views from the rooms.
Bright colours have been intentionally avoided to keep the natural looks and generous use of wood and exposed brick make this house truly a slice of nature within the walls.
Step inside the house and it’s hard to believe the sense of space and airiness within just 1750 square feet. This was made possible thanks to thoughtful designing that avoided walls wherever possible. Car porch, courtyard, verandah, formal living, dining, kitchen and three bedrooms — all within the limited space and breathtaking natural setting — this is the dream house every urban dweller would want to retire to.
