As the pace of modern life continues to accelerate, we are becoming more and more disconnected from nature and its life-giving benefits. With the skyrocketing pollution levels and lessening of time in our lives, it’s evermore important to bring nature back to our lives. We look back at five uniquely designed homes that are not only cost-effective, but help the inhabitants reconnect with the nature.

1. Many architects and designers are proactively finding ways to reconnect us with the touch and feel of nature and this home in Trivandrum is a great example of how to blend practicality and style into traditional architecture. Read more

2. The exterior of the house has the quintessential traditional look, complete with unplastered laterite blocks, vietnam roof tiles, and mud plastering. Cashew Nut shell liquid-based cement was used for better durability. Exposed walls not only added a rustic appeal to the building, but also saved significant plastering cost. Read more

3. Building a home on a budget does not necessarily mean you must compromise the elements that turn the house into your dream home. A perfect example is this house, which was completed under Rs. 20 lakh, while meeting every requirement of the dwellers. Read more

4. Renovating an old house comes with some challenges but nothing else can beat its charm. This old house in Cochin was more than 75 years old and had the limitations of space and strength. The old house had two stories with only one room on the first floor. Architects rearranged the rooms to make the spaces more usable, while retaining the old charm of every nook and corner. Two bedrooms on the ground floor was converted to living room and kitchen, while the large old kitchen was converted into the master bedroom. One more bedroom, family living and attic was added to the first floor. Terracota tiles were used for the flooring to keep the rustic charm. Low compound walls ensure the beauty of the house is fully visible from outside.

5. This single-storied, three bedroom house was completed for just Rs 20 lakh. 1450 square feet construction was done using old wood, roof tiles from ancestral house, aluminum fabrication for kitchen cabinets, GI truss roofing etc. to keep cost under control.
