Q: I’m to be posted shortly to Hyderabad for a fixed period of time, and I’ve heard so much about the traffic congestion. Since I’ll be commuting using my 2-wheeler every day, I need to know more about the problems afflicting road transport in Hyderabad.
I would love to tell you more about the roads in Hyderabad that are so big they fit in thousands of vehicles with ease, but that would be beside the point. Personally, I live in a more developed part of Hyderabad called Gachibowli. So, I’m fairly alienated from the annoying traffic jams that I so frequently hear of. I do have to travel to nearby Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills sometimes, and I can tell that though the roads in these localities are big, you’d still have difficulty with the traffic. Along with the number of vehicles, the number of bottlenecks and potholes have grown as well from what I see. The Metro is expected to provide some relief once it’s complete, but we’ll have wait sometime for that to happen.
Hi! I can’t deny the fact of traffic problems in Hyderabad. Being a Hyderabadi, I’m proud of my city’s achievements but definitely not of its present traffic condition. The Hyderabad Metro Rail, which is still under constructed, is touted to be a complete cure for the Hyderabad’s traffic woes. However, this project is being developed in a haphazard manner, with a foundation work having already been done in most parts of the city. But since the foundation work also takes up more space that what is ideal, the roadways in many parts of Hyderabad have become very crowded. I only hope that the Metro construction is done with quickly, so that life goes back to normal.
You may heard of people raving about the spacious roads in the newly-developed parts of Hyderabad. It’s all true, however, this fact just goes on to make people ignore the other side of the equation. In the older parts of the city such as Malakpet, Ramanthapur, and Dilsukhnagar, the roads have come to be badly neglected. The roads have not yet been developed to fully accommodate the growing volume of traffic. This has led to the creation of bottlenecks that sometime take hours to clear. I think the present traffic condition in Hyderabad is almost comparable to the situation in Bangalore, which is in quite a bad state.
