Q: Hey I’ve noticed that there are a number of traffic signals on some major roads of Coimbatore that don’t work properly. Are the authorities aware of this? Is anything being done about them?
Yeah, he’s right. The city police and the corporation have indeed teamed up on this issue. This problem was actually brought up and discussed in a Traffic Advisory Committee meeting, where it was also decided that all the 51 signals in the city will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, who can use them for advertisement purposes. The problem previously was that the private parties were only selecting a handful of signals to sponsor. Some of the signals were getting completely neglected because of this. This new system will help a lot actually.
Well see the thing is that these traffic signals used to be maintained by private parties. But that’s not always a reliable mode of revenue generation. When these patrons stopped paying for their maintenance work, the signals fell into disrepair. So now because of bad display, the drivers on the roads cant figure out how long they have to wait at the signals. I think the city police is aware of this problem and they have teamed up with the Coimbatore Corporation to deal with this issue asap.
You’re right man! These traffic signals are a real hazard for us. And its all because of poor maintenance work. The timers are all messed up on the signals, and only a part of it is visible, because it doesn’t even display properly. I think the corporation is already aware of this problem, but I don’t know what they are doing to take care of it. Anybody knows something more about this, that they want to share?
