Encroachment problems in Coimbatore
Q: I keep hearing about encroachment problems in all the cities throughout the country. Tell me, is Coimbatore suffering from the same? I’m asking because I’m seriously considering this city for an investment.
Yes even I’m aware of this problem. The officials from the town planning department of the corporation are currently doing a survey all around the different zones of the city. The civic body has gone easy on these miscreants so far. I think its because the corporation doesn’t have the strength in their numbers to deal with this problem with proper force. Even the town planning committee feel that they are falling short of staff needed to handle this encroachment issue.
I know about that encroaching on the land marked for the corporation. I also know of a couple of instances of that. Like the three-storey building that came up on an approximately 5000 sq. feet of land in Meenakshi Nagar in Thadagam Raod. This land was actually meant to be used for some kind of public service. Oh another, there was a site reserved for a park in SG Rajarathinam Nagar near Selvapuram; but now a Palli Vasal has come up there
What can I say, encroachment is in full force here in Coimbatore. I personally believe that it is one of the most detrimental things to happen to the real estate growth in the city. The land is occupied otherwise, and money has to be spent even on the demolition and clearing of these lands, which could have been utilised in a more fruitful way. Here in Coimbatore these encroachers will take over even the land kept aside for the city corporation!
