Q: "Smart Cities to be a reality in India"
Its features may appear somewhat futuristic, but are likely to become a reality in India in less than a decade, as the smart city concept takes hold. The first-of-its-kind partially completed smart city project in Mumbai, expected to be completed in 2025, is by the Lodha Group.
Hi Praveen, Lot's of information is still missing in this article such as first 20 cities have been selected under the smart city mission, Rs.100 crore has issued to these cities and the rest of the fund arranged by the state govt. through taxes. Mumbai Smart City has to face a lot of issues like coastal zone, environmental, mangroove forest, land acquisition etc. So, kindly update those information.
Hello Everybody!!! We all know that the government has recently identified 98 cities for the Smart City Project. But funding for these projects and its execution will be a major challenge for companies. There is no doubt that this mission is expected to improve the quality of life for citizens of these cities. For government, the focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at intensive areas and create a exemplary model.
But Abhijit, i think that it would be better if the govt's focus on smaller number of cities first and then developing them as model for others going forward.
Under the mission, it will be operated as a centrally sponsored scheme and the centre will give financial support to the limit of Rs 48000 crore over 5 yrs, which is on an average Rs 1000 crore per city per year. And an equal amount, on a matching basis, will have to be contributed by the state and urban local bodies.
"Thoda Khaye but achcha Khaye" .....Sarkar ko ish or sochna chaiye
If we look at the list of cities which have been selected as smart city, many of them would already have annual municipal budgets running into multiple times of this figure. On the other hand, there are few states which have shown doubt for implementing the scheme and if there is not enough support from them in terms of funding and administrative help, it would be difficult to take this scheme to its reasonable result.
Sahi bole Abhijit Ji...... "Jyada Khakar Bimar Hone se Achcha Hai ki Kum Khakar Healthy Rahe".........
Government grants will be leveraged to attract funding from internal and external sources but unless there is a possible business model or guarantee from the centre, this would not be easy.
Also, the track record of Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects is at best mixed and when there would be multiple parties involved like the center, states, local bodies and private entities, the task would be even more challenging.
Hi Naveenavi. You are right. Lodha Group is developing India's first smart city which is named as 'Palava City' which is located near to Dombivali. Its a 4000 acres project. HI,
Have you heard this news that none of cities of Andhra Pradesh qualify to be "Smart City" list in the 40 lacs population category. Although there are only 13 districts in AP, there are 2 towns in some districts like Chittoor and Tirupati, Rajahmundry and Kakinada, and Eluru and Bhimavaram which can qualify to be selected under the "Smart City” scheme in the "less than 10 lakh population cities" category.
Yeh, you are right. Municipal and urban development minister Dr P. Narayana confirmed that only Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada qualify in the smart city category having 10-40 lakh population.
Hi,
As our Prime Minister Narendra is desired to improve India's urban appearance with the construction of 100 smart cities with high-tech, interlinking communications capabilities across the country. In the past cities were built on riverbanks. Now they are building along highways. But in future they will be based on optical fiber networks and next generation infrastructure as per our PM's speech last month.
Hi Ramesk, As per our PM the creation of infrastructure and more specifically new cities is the prime solution to India's fast urbanizing population doubt. If country has to generate employment and change for the betterment of the country, we must plan to build 100 smart cities.
@ Sunil,
You are absolutely right. Several smart city projects are already having started and in progress, including in the state of Gujarat, where Modi's dream project, the Gujarat International Finance and Tec-city, known as GIFT City, is in the primary stages of development.
