The flat terrain of Chennai City needs effective Storm Water Drainage System to prevent water stagnation in roads. The terrain of Chennai city is flat and average level of the land in the city is only 2.5m above the Mean Sea Level (MSL). Because of this flat terrain and partial coverage of roads with storm water drains, flooding and water stagnation happens in the city during the monsoons.
Usually Storm Water Drain will be Provided in 12 m road and above. The minimum size of the drain will be 600X750 mm; the size will be designed depending upon the catchments area, land pattern and discharge. Under JnNURM Scheme, Storm Water drains are designed to relieve Water Stagnation in the Water logging areas irrespective of the width of the road.
As per my knowledge, in Chitlapakkam, there is a liquid waste management plant where sewage flowing into the storm water drains along Balaji Avenue is treated at the plant before being discharged into Sembakkam Lake. What is the benefit if still stinking smell is coming while walking in Chennai.
Yes Mr Vkumar I agreed, In my point of view, this thing too has not been completely successful as sewage continues to drain into the lake from multiple entry points. The biggest casualty of polluted and contaminated storm water drains was supply of drinking water. This is because main and distribution lines passed through storm water drains and due to corrosive condition of these pipes, sewage mixing with the drinking water was common occurrence.
As per my own experience, in southern suburbs drainage water are making artificial lakes in road. In the absence of underground drainage networks, local bodies had no other option other than creating storm water drains to keep localities free from stagnation of sewage.
Storm water drains constructed along arterial roads in the southern suburbs such as Grand Southern Trunk Road and Velachery Main Road were well planned. Most of the residents say lack of proper drainage system at the entrance of Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board’s (TNSCB) flats is the main cause for the problem.
Residents of TNSCB flats are forced to endure stagnant pools while filling water from three ground-level Sintex water tanks. People residing opposite the flats complain about sewage mixing with drinking water stored in sumps. After making alots of complains to re construct the leaking manual chambers and construct the required sewage lines , still no action has been taken till date .
