You know I always felt that electric poles and transformers took over a lot of space which would in turn cause a lot of traffic. But now that this has happened the trafffic situation will be eased dowan a fair bit and roads will be a lot more spacious.
Hey, I live around one of the areas where these works are going on. The corporation was very particular about informing us several days ahead of schedule about the work happening so that people won't be hindered by this work.
I was keen about this and asked the concerned official about why this was being done. He said that the conversion of over head lines to under gorund ones actually reduces the line faults that can sometimes taken a long time to be repaired.
A few bit more about what I found out. The R-APDRP project was taken up a cost of about Rs. 300 crores in the coimbatore and it includes setting up of RMU (Ring Main Unit) panels across the city and the cables connecting these will also be underground.
About the low tension wires here. It is expected to cover over 150 km, which will be converted to underground cables. This is also expected to be completed in the residential areas as they are the main areas where this is needed.
Work being done here is pretty extensive. I went to ask an engineer to ask about it. He said that these underground cable works included new cables and conversion of overhead lines to underground cables. This will incerase the overall performance of the lines.
So here's what's happening right now. High Tension lines are being laid for about 10 kilo metres and about 94 kilo metres of over head lines are being converted into underground cables. This will actually curb the voltage problems that is expaected to happen a lot.
This project will be covering some major areas of Coimbatore. Several types of wires like low tension and high tension, lines would go underground in areas such as RS Puram, Ramanathapuram, Gandhipuram and Krishnasamy Nagar among others so that there is no need for on road poles.
Hello. Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme was where this project came under. It was expected to be completed by the March of this year but due to some glitches it will be taking 2-3 more than anticipated.
