Q: Hi, I want to know what all are the developments that are going on in regard to the proposed Kochi solar city? Can you explain it please? thank you.
Oh yeah...the institute has estimated that by 2021, Kochi city would need 975 million units (MU) of power every year. It was proposed to reduce the dependence of the local body on conventional energy by 10 per cent in five years by shifting to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency initiatives.
You know, the Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development of the Kochi Corporation is also coordinating the activities related to the solar city for the local body. The draft master plan with a financial outlay of Rs. 696.59 crore was prepared by the All India Institute of Local Self Governance.
As far as I came to know, the draft master plan is already been set up. The local body had drawn up a draft master plan, which was discussed with the stakeholders recently.
The inputs provided by the stakeholders were also incorporated and forwarded to the Ministry for approval.
I came to know that the Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) will be responsible for monitoring and implementing the programme as suggested by the Ministry. ANERT will also furnish the utilisation certificate of funds. Also, funds will be released further on receipt of the utilisation certificate.
Besides the preparation of the plan within one year, the city is expected to develop a detailed project report using the funds, according to a communication issued by the Ministry. Setting up of a Solar City Cell and other promotional activities has to be undertaken using the funds.
I think that the proposed project for building the Solar city in Kochi has got its first instalment of funds. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released Rs. 19.42 lakh as the first instalment of the preparation of a master plan for the development of Kochi as a solar city.
