Vastu tips for a perfect balcony, verandah and roof
Selecting the right direction and right spaces is very important while building a house. According to the ancient science of Vastu Shastra, homes will get positively enriched with peace and prosperity if certain design aspects have been taken care of. More and more people are now realizing the need of Vastu-complaint houses.
According to Vastu principles, certain areas of the house receive more focus and attention. Some important areas like balconies, verandah and roof play a major role in balancing the overall energy of the house. Having a wrongly built balcony can negate all the good work done for the other rooms.
Here are some Vastu Shastra tips to attain the perfect direction for the verandah, roof and balcony.
Vastu for Verandah and Balcony
The best direction to build a balcony or a verandah is the northern and eastern directions of the house. North to north-east and eastern direction is considered as positive directions and south and south-west are considered as directions enhancing the negativity of the house. Any balcony located in the south or south-west side of the house must be covered and closed.
Another important aspect of Vastu Shastra when it comes to balcony and verandah is that floor and roof of the balcony must always be built lower than the floor or roof of the main building compound.
In case for a covered verandah, tin roofing is ideally suited as it can be slanted towards the preferred north-eastern direction. Balconies should never have arches as per Vastu Shastra design while special attention needs to be given to make sure that the corners of the verandah are not rounded. If you are planning to grow creepers and flower pots in your verandah, make sure that all pots used in the verandah are of a smaller size. Since most people like to have a dedicated section to keep shoes while entering the house, it is ideal to place a shoe rack in the north-eastern direction of the verandah.
Furniture in balcony
If you are placing furniture in the balcony, as far as possible try to avoid heavy furniture that obstructs sunlight. It is ideal to place seating in the south-west side of the balcony. If you are placing a swing in the balcony, east-west direction is the best, ie, the person sitting on the swing should face the north or south direction.
Vastu for the roof
If the basic direction of the location of the plot is considered as per Vastu Shastra, then the roof is more likely to be Vastu compliant. The only other essential parameter that needs to be considered while constructing a roof is to make sure that the slant or the slope of the roof should be towards the north-eastern direction. If north-eastern direction is not possible due to architectural constraints or design limitations, north or east are good as well. The balcony roofs should be at a lesser height than the roof of the main building.
Do’s and Don’ts for the balcony, verandah and roof
- Avoid openings to the south
- Squares and rectangles are the preferred shapes for balconies and verandahs.
- Wide openings towards east are more advantageous
- Roofs sloping towards the south, south-west or south-east should be avoided
- The roof over balconies should be lower than that of the main building roof
Most of the Vastu principles are based on the logic of architectural science; so it is ideal to follow them for a flawless construction.
