Kanakapura is one of the areas located in outer vicinity of Bangalore. The locality is the headquarter of Kanakapura Taluk situated in the Ramanagara district. It is located around 56 kms away from Bangalore city and on the banks of Arkavati river. The place is famous for granite and silk production which adds up to the state's revenue.
Kanakapura was earlier known as Kanakanahalli and later changed to its current name. The area was initially under the administration of Gangas and later moved onto Cholas. It was in the reign of Hoysala, it was mentioned as Kanikaranahalli in between 1319 and 1317 A.D. There is a fort in this place which is said to be built by Jagadeva Raya.
The taluk has a total of 43 village panchayats. The main occupation of its residents is settled in granite industry, brick and bamboo production, silk production, etc. Around 38 villages of it are dedicated towards bee-keeping industry.
