For instance, the production in the salt pan has come down drastically, thanks to the raw untreated sewage let out into the south Buckingham Canal. Over the last few years, salt production in localities such as Kelambakkam, Thiruvidanthai, Thaiyur, and Kalavakkam has significantly reduced.
Approximately 3,500 acres of land has been leased out by the Central and State governments to salt manufacturers. As the water in the canal is polluted, salt manufacturers have been forced to extract sub-soil brine from the ground. Although the density of brine is much more than seawater, the output is not much. The salt manufacturers have raised a request to the authorities to prevent sewage inflow into the canal, but Public Works Department and Metrowater have turned a deaf ear to their requests. This contaminated water has caused many to get skin ailments.
