Hey, adding to what Rajneesh said, the waste management plant at Nettoor vegetable market, which was converting biodegradable wastes into manure, has also become bad. The main factor that affected these plants is over loading. Not any effective actions are taken to fix this issue, as well. There are various political factors and feuds involved in it, making the problem sustain as opposed fixing it.
Kochi Corporation has spent a lot of money in setting up the biogas plants in the city, but it has all became a waste as the majority of the plants are not operating. Various biogas plants like the ones at Ernakulam Market, Kaloor slaughterhouse, and Ayurveda hospital compound at Fort Kochi Veli are all in very bad conditions. On top of being a futile effort by the Kochi Corporation, these plants are also causing various types of hindrances to the locals. The biogas plant situated at Ravipuram has exploded when it got overloaded with gas. This has created havoc among the residents nearby. Out of the fifteen biogas plants set up in and around the city to treat biodegradable wastes and also generate electricity, eight plants are not functioning due to poor maintenance and supervision. The information was supplied by K J Sohan, Kochi Corporation Development Standing Committee Chairman.
