The Kochi Municipal Corporation has at last realized the need for septic waste treatment plants in the city, and have plans to construct one soon. They corporation have taken this up only after increased pressure and protest from residents to clear septic waste. The corporation has promised to build a sewage treatment plant at the Cochin Port Trust in Kundannoor. The plant will be on four acres of land, and the corporation will mostly use a Build-Operate-Transfer mode. Because there is no place to treat the waste, they are dumped on the Container Terminal Road. There are also plans to build a sewage treatment plant in Brahmapuram.

Residents of Muvattupuzha, Perumbavoor, Mulavukadu and Kunnathunadu have complained about septic waste dumped in their neighbourhood, which caused a stench. There has also been one case where the lorry drivers, who were dumping waste in an open land, where beaten up by residents, and their lorry set on fire. Kerala already has a lot of water borne diseases, and the open dumping of septic waste will only increase the number of diseases.

There is absolutely no infrastructure to clear or treat septic waste in Kochi. The only solution for residents is septic tanks and these septic tanks have to be cleaned out once a year. But, the problem is that there is no place where the septic waste can be dumped. Usually the septic tanks are cleaned by private contractors who dump the waste in open lands in the outskirts of the city.
