So work has finally started! Inspections in 28 buildings that have been specifically identified as having the danger of collapsing and breaking down. The Local Planning Authority has taken the help of the Public Works Department as the LPA and Corporation both lack the skilled engineers required for the job. Buildings that have more than 4 floors are the ones that have been chosen for inspection. And 40 more buildings were identified from Chennai which are also going to inspected soon. All in all it is good that the authorities are trying to learn from their mistakes and correcting them instantly. What happened to the 61 residents in Chennai because of inefficient building materials was a disaster, a tragedy and shouldn't ever happen again!

That's the thing right? It is not very easy to just evacuate 540 families from their house. True, they have been given notices 3 times before this to find a new place to stay but these people live in spaces that are only 300 sq. feet and for them to just shift to some new quarters is difficult. They need some government support as well. They also don't want to shift their child in the middle of the academic year as they feel they won't find a new school for them in time. SOme of these evicted residents have agreed to move but want the arrangements for a new place to be taken care of by the authorities. There actually are vacant spots in places like Singanallur and Saravanampatti. But their houses do pose a threat as they have been declared unfit for living long back in 1970 when quality wasn't considered. They had to be demolished about 40 years ago but it still hasn't happened. so these building should definitely be checked for stability!

The 12 store building collapse in Chennai this year has actually brought some panic among the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and with good reason! Nobody expected something like that to happen and because of that, there are plans for a complete building stability check in the city of Coimbatore. This is a very good enforcement of order and should be carried out efficiently. Residents who need to relocate because of this should corporate as this is, at the end of the day, for their own safety. I think about 540 families need to be evacuated and shifted somewhere else so that work on those dilapidated buildings can start.
