Well, I think what’s happening is that the GHMC are only bothered about the encroachments that are directly affecting the metro construction works. Otherwise nobody gives a damn. Few days back only during an inspection, the corporation came across a case where a resident of Punjagutta had kept iron rods on the road, blocking traffic flow. The area was near the metro construction. So he was seized immediately. But there are a lot many cases like this in other parts of the city that go by unnoticed.
Dude the encroachment cell that you’re talking about aren’t that good when it comes to taking care of real encroachment problems. What they are doing is just catching these small vendors who set up stalls on the footpaths sometimes, you know, the vegetable sellers, or the small junk food shops, and all that. These are the kinds of people that the encroachment cell catches everyday and then exhorts money from them. Whereas the main culprits like the owners of commercial complexes who commit the most real kind of encroachment in front of their properties, get away scot free.
Well the GHMC are fully aware of this problem from quite some time now, but still it keeps on happening. But it seems that at the moment most of their attention is focussed on the metro rail project. There is already an encroachment cell, and on an average they collect about Rs 20,000 by fining whatever cases of encroachments they can find. In fact they had even collected a bulk of Rs 1 lakh one time during a drive.
